Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services seeks a Chemistry Technician II for its Soil Testing Laboratory. You will perform high-volume analytical testing on soil samples to provide fertility recommendations while maintaining safety and compliance.

Ideal candidates hold a chemistry-related degree with lab experience, can work with minimal supervision, and will train junior staff while ensuring accurate data and records.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Associate degree in chemical, biological, microbiological, environmental or natural resource sciences with related chemistry coursework and lab experience.
  • Two years of related chemistry laboratory experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to perform complex laboratory tests and procedures and guide junior staff.
  • Strong written and verbal communication of results and procedures.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs., stand for long periods, repetitive wrist/hand movements.

Responsibilities

  • Subsampling soil samples using volumetric scoops.
  • Weighing soil samples on an analytical balance.
  • Extracting nutrients from soil samples.
  • Operating ICP-OES instruments.
  • Determining soil pH and electrical conductivity.
  • Conducting UV/Vis spectroscopy analysis.
  • Using LIMS for data entry and retrieval.
  • Training and mentoring junior technicians.
  • Maintaining records and labware cleanliness.
  • Adhering to SOPs and safety protocols.
