Software Systems Engineer – AI/GenAI & Automation (Remote, USA)
The Role
We're looking for a hands-on AI Developer/Engineer to take over and mature an internal library of AI-powered toolkits, agents, and automations, currently maintained by a small group and running with no version control, and turn it into a stable, well-managed platform the wider team can rely on and extend.
This is practical, delivery-focused work: building and automating AI agents, cutting the cost of running them, deploying solutions to the cloud, managing the codebase in GitHub, opening up a large internal knowledge base to the team, and supporting a small non-engineering team who depend on these tools day to day.
What You'll Do
- Own the GitHub repositories. Migrate existing, currently unversioned code into GitHub, set up a repo structure and workflow a small team will actually follow, and directly train and guide the development team on GitHub practices.
- Build and automate AI agents. Set up, configure, and automate AI agents and workflows that handle routine business and data tasks, reducing manual effort across the team.
- Cut the cost and time of running AI agents. Measure where token usage and run time actually go today, establish a baseline, then move routine, repeatable work behind a callable interface (an MCP server, a plugin, an agent service, or a small internal app) instead of having every run load large amounts of context. Report a measured before/after improvement.
- Develop and deploy AI-driven solutions. Work hands-on with existing AI tools and frameworks (OpenAI and others) to build features, not just prototype them, and take them to production.
- Deploy and maintain cloud infrastructure. Work across AWS and/or Google Cloud, web servers, and standard deployment practices to keep AI solutions running reliably.
- Open the Obsidian knowledge base to the team. Turn a large, existing Obsidian vault (hundreds of markdown pages, built from source documents and meeting notes) into a shared retrieval system: multi-user writes, access control for restricted pages, answers that cite the page they came from, and a system that says "I don't know" rather than guessing.
- Support the team in Python. Strong, confident Python usage to extend and maintain the shared codebase; you don't need to build everything from scratch, but you need to be able to read, debug, and extend what's there.
- Automate business and data processes. Identify manual, repetitive work and use AI/automation to remove it, this is a core, ongoing part of the role, not a one-off project.
- Bring broad technical range. Comfortable moving across AI, automation, development, cloud infrastructure, and knowledge-management tooling rather than being narrowly specialized in just one layer.
Must-Have Skills
- GitHub expertise – can manage repositories, support GitHub-based workflows, and train/guide the wider development team
- Python – strong working knowledge; you extend and maintain existing code rather than needing to build everything new
- AI/GenAI experience – hands-on, practical experience with AI solutions, including OpenAI
- AI agent development/automation – experience setting up and automating AI agents and workflows, not just calling an API
- AI solution development and deployment – able to take an AI-driven solution from build to production
- Token/cost optimization – experience measuring AI usage costs and reducing them by moving work behind tools, APIs, or services instead of raw context loading
- Obsidian or a comparable markdown knowledge base – experience building or querying a retrieval system over a large vault of interlinked documents, ideally with access control and cited answers
- Cloud/web technologies – familiarity with AWS, Google Cloud, web servers, and deployment
- Broad technical range across AI, automation, development, cloud, and knowledge management
Nice to Have
- GitHub Copilot or other AI coding assistants and AI development tools
- Strong track record automating data or business processes using AI
- Product management or solution-development experience
- Familiarity with a shared internal Python library used across a team
- Experience with SharePoint, Smartsheet, or other Microsoft 365 tools
- Experience with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), citation-grounded answers, or vector search
