Software Platform Engineering Manager - Ubuntu for Next-Gen Silicon

Teams meet in person 2-4 times a year in various exciting locations worldwide to align on strategy and execution.

We seek engineering managers passionate about operational systems, open source technologies, and cutting-edge hardware to lead teams that enable and optimize Ubuntu for the latest x86, ARM, RISC-V, s390x, and POWER systems. We collaborate with leading silicon vendors to optimize Ubuntu on their platforms, integrating new features and performance improvements while maintaining a consistent user experience.

As an Engineering Manager, you should be an outstanding developer, comfortable reviewing patches and design specs. You will promote healthy engineering practices, documentation, quality, and performance, leading your team to deliver high-quality designs and code.

This role involves line management, career development, representing your team and product technically, and fostering collaboration with other teams and customers. You will influence company culture, facilitate technical delivery, and work on strategy and execution.

Location: This is a globally remote position with openings in every time zone.

Responsibilities:
  1. Lead and develop a team of engineers, from graduates to seniors
  2. Oversee commercial engagements and ensure timely project delivery
  3. Lead complex customer engagements involving system architectures
  4. Implement disciplined engineering processes
  5. Maintain and integrate platform software stacks
  6. Optimize Ubuntu for new hardware platforms
  7. Provide technical leadership internally and externally
  8. Participate in code reviews and documentation
  9. Collaborate with leadership teams
Qualifications:
  • Strong academic background from high school and university
  • BSc in Computer Science or STEM, or equivalent experience
  • Fluency in C, C++, and Python
  • Experience with Linux and system software (kernel or user space)
  • Experience with Debian/Ubuntu or other distro packaging
  • Leadership experience in software engineering
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written)
  • Confidence in discussing ideas and giving feedback
  • Thoughtfulness and self-motivation
  • Result-driven with a commitment to deliver
  • Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with open source communities and licenses
  • Knowledge of computer architecture (x86, ARM, RISC-V, s390x)
  • Understanding of build systems and cross-compilation
  • Experience working with customers
  • Experience with board bring-up and validation
  • Knowledge of Linux virtualization, networking, or graphics stacks
  • Experience with Docker, OCI containers, K8s
  • Familiarity with confidential computing, RDMA, Infiniband, HPC
  • Performance engineering, benchmarking, profiling
