Job summary

TikTok in San Jose seeks a Senior Software Engineer (Privacy) to join the Privacy VaDE Team. You will design and implement detection methods to monitor privacy gaps and support incident response with robust data protection practices.

You will collaborate with legal, compliance, and product teams to embed privacy-by-design in new features and ensure alignment with GDPR, CCPA, and other global laws. Experience building large-scale data privacy solutions is essential.

Qualifications

• Familiarity with core privacy concepts such as data minimization, purpose limitation, data sovereignty, transparency, and data retention.
• Proven software development experience involving large scale data environments with an emphasis on building detection systems.
• Strong offensive security & privacy testing skills with a focus on privacy concerns.
• Proven experience in privacy assessments, data protection, and compliance.
• In-depth knowledge of global privacy regulations and standards, including GDPR, CCPA, etc.

Responsibilities

• Privacy Detection: Develop detection methods to continuously assess and monitor for gaps in our privacy posture.
• Privacy Validation: Perform tests on suspected privacy vulnerabilities to validate the presence of a vulnerability and gather evidence to support remediation efforts.
• Incident Response and Data Breach Management: Assist in privacy-related incident and inquiry response efforts. Perform technical investigations on privacy incidents, identify root causes, and recommend mitigation and remediation actions to prevent future occurrences.
• Data Protection Compliance: Stay up-to-date with global privacy regulations, such as GDPR, CCPA, or other relevant data protection laws. Ensure our organization's practices align with applicable privacy laws and standards. Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to maintain and improve privacy policies and procedures. Work closely with development and product teams to incorporate privacy best practices into the design and development of new products and features. Advocate for "privacy by design" principles to embed privacy considerations throughout the product development lifecycle.
• Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed records of privacy assessments, testing, detections, and related activities. Generate regular reports for management and stakeholders, providing insights on privacy risks.

TikTok's Privacy VaDE Team is responsible for validating potential privacy gaps, developing robust detections to enable continuous privacy monitoring, and providing technical engineering support during urgent incident & inquiry response efforts. As a Senior Software Engineer within the Privacy VaDE Team, you will be responsible for assessing and enhancing the privacy and data protection measures within our organization. Your primary focus will be on developing detection methods to monitor for the presence of privacy gaps. Leveraging your expertise in data protection and development, you will play a vital role in safeguarding the privacy of our users' information and ensuring compliance with relevant data privacy laws.

Key Responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with basic security concepts including OWASP Top 10.
• Excellent understanding of data handling processes, data flows, and data lifecycle management.
• Effective communication skills to interact with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Detail-oriented, analytical mindset, with the ability to think critically and solve complex privacy challenges.
• Strong commitment to ethics and confidentiality in dealing with sensitive data.
• Relevant certifications in privacy and data protection (e.g., CIPP/E, CIPM, CIPT, OSCP) are a plus.

Compensation Description (annually): The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $194,000 - $355,000 annually. Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives and restricted stock units.
