Software Engineering Manager - Sustaining Engineering

We are hiring a passionate Engineering Manager for Sustaining Engineering, responsible for leading a regional team that continuously improves open source software by resolving defects. This role reports directly to the global Director of Sustaining Engineering.

Responsibilities

1. Manage and lead a distributed team of engineers.
2. Hire, coach, mentor, and provide career development guidance.
3. Manage KPIs and training programs.
4. Support delivery of bug fixes and patches for various technologies including Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, and MAAS.
5. Represent Canonical positively in customer interactions.
6. Coordinate expectations with other teams and stakeholders.
7. Promote modern software development practices.
8. Foster a collaborative engineering culture.
9. Collaborate across teams within the organization.
10. Work remotely with up to 10% travel for internal and external events.

Qualifications

• Experience in software delivery using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar.
• Strong passion and knowledge in software development.
• Leadership experience in problem resolution and bug fixing.
• Proficiency with version control systems like git.
• Experience with debugging tools such as gdb or crash.
• Commitment to testing methodologies and maintainable code.
• Excellent English communication skills.
• Experience with Linux, preferably Ubuntu.
• Familiarity with Open Source and its business models.
• People management experience in support organizations is a plus.
