Job summary

Caterpillar is seeking a Manager Software Engineering to lead multiple engineering teams building Physical AI mission automation and remote-control platforms in Irving, TX. The role focuses on reliability of real-time autonomy systems and setting engineering standards across critical control platforms.

You will collaborate with product, architecture, security, and business stakeholders to ensure platform capabilities meet evolving customer needs and enterprise strategy.

You'll build and deploy against one of the most unique data foundations - over 1.6 million connected assets generating real-world data daily. What You Will Do

The Manager Software Engineering leads engineering teams responsible for building Physical AI mission automation, execution/control services, remote control platforms, command validation, state transitions, safety integration points, and machine/gateway integration services. This role drives delivery, ensures reliability of real-time/autonomy systems, and establishes engineering standards across critical control platforms.

  • Lead multiple engineering teams delivering autonomy execution services, mission automation, and remote-control capabilities.
  • Define and execute the vision for several scalable and secure platform Services and APIs that promote reuse, reduce duplication, and improve developer productivity.
  • Collaborate closely with product, architecture, security, and business stakeholders to ensure platform capabilities align with long-term enterprise strategy and evolving customer needs.
  • Drive the design and development of Platform Services/APIs with reusability in mind, balancing immediate business needs with future use cases by anticipating and forecasting evolving requirements.
  • You will constantly seek opportunities to improve organizational efficiencies
What You Will Have
  • Organizational Leadership: Demonstrated ability to build and lead high-performing engineering teams, foster a culture of accountability and innovation, and influence cross-functional stakeholders to deliver enterprise platform strategy and outcomes.
  • Software Architecture : Deep understanding of designing and evolving reusable platform services (shared APIs, common frameworks, foundational services) that enable downstream product teams to scale efficiently.
  • Software Development: Proven expertise in designing and delivering scalable, cloud-native distributed systems, Platform Services and APIs, and driving engineering best practices across quality, performance, reliability, security, and automation.
  • Operational Excellence : Ability to detect systemic issues early, manage risk proactively, and drive corrective actions across teams and services.
Top Candidates Will Have
  • Strong background in cloud-native services, APIs, automation, observability, and production readiness.
  • Gen AI Assisted Development : Practical experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools (such as GitHub Copilot or automated agent workflows) to accelerate code generation, boilerplate reduction, and automated testing across multiple teams.
  • Vision & Execution at Scale : Proven ability to set a clear platform and engineering vision and drive multiple complex initiatives in parallel through a large organization of 20+ software engineers, aligning teams, managing dependencies, and delivering outcomes with consistency and accountability.

Summary Pay Range:

$147,760.00 - $240,110.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
