Job description

  • Write production code every week across the storefront, backend, and front end, and carry a meaningful share of the team's delivery personally.
  • Own the production portal end to end: uptime, page performance, checkout reliability, and defects that affect orders or conversion. Lead incident response and drive durable fixes rather than one-off patches.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for Bag Caddie stakeholders. Translate business requirements into technical scope, surface risks early, and commit to realistic delivery dates.
  • Design the architecture that connects Shopify with Crane's systems: order, inventory, shipment, and tracking data flows, API contracts, and the backend services that support them.
  • Build and customize the Shopify storefront and custom apps using Liquid, theme architecture, and the Shopify Admin, Storefront, and GraphQL APIs.
  • Implement and maintain payment processing and credit card handling to tokenization and PCI standards.
  • Build and lead the team: define hiring needs, interview and select engineers, onboard them, set expectations, give feedback, and run performance and career conversations. Scale the team up or down as the customer's roadmap requires.
  • Set and uphold engineering standards for testing, code review, security, observability, secrets handling, feature-flag hygiene, and formal change management for production releases.
  • Use storefront analytics (GA4, Shopify Analytics, heatmaps) to find conversion and usability problems, and prioritize fixes with the customer and product.
  • Run the team's agile cadence: sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and release planning, with clear ownership for each piece of work.
  • Partner with the Application Engineering, Client Integrations, and platform teams so the portal uses Crane's shared tooling and patterns instead of one-off solutions.
  • Document system design, deployment procedures, and runbooks so the portal does not depend on any single person.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation and provide extended coverage during customer peak sales periods.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
  • Talking, hearing and using hands to operate computer equipment
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus
  • Job may require extended sitting or standing, use of standard office equipment.
  • Job may require punctual attendance and regular presence on-site at the assigned work location.
Other Skills & Abilities

Backend fluency on Crane's stack: C# or F# on .NET, REST API design, SQL Server and PostgreSQL schema design and query tuning, AWS services, event-driven messaging (Kafka, SQS, or Azure Service Bus), CI/CD, and infrastructure as code (Terraform). Experience with Node.js or another runtime commonly used for Shopify apps is a plus.

Front-end fluency: React and TypeScript, state management (Redux, Context, Zustand, or similar), advanced CSS/SCSS, responsive and mobile-first development, component systems, and the ability to turn rough wireframes into pixel-accurate production UI without a design handoff. Working knowledge of accessibility practices.

Operations: GitHub and GitHub Actions, feature flagging and progressive delivery (LaunchDarkly or equivalent), dashboards and alerting (Grafana or equivalent), incident management tooling and process (Incident.io or equivalent), and a track record of supporting a production e-commerce site independently.

Leadership: hiring, onboarding, and developing engineers; running an agile team; setting technical direction and aligning a team behind it; working directly with customer and business stakeholders; and communicating technical trade-offs clearly in writing and diagrams.

  • Leads from the keyboard: stays hands-on in the code while building and directing the team.
