Job summary

RTX is seeking a Software Engineer Intern in Maryland to work on secure, high‑assurance software for government and defense systems. You will contribute across the full lifecycle—from architecture and design to integration, test, and field support—with cross‑functional teams.

Pursuing a Bachelor's or advanced degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM field, you must be enrolled through the internship.

Qualifications

  • Experience developing in C++ in a Linux environment.
  • Experience with scripting languages, Python, Linux script, Bash.
  • Experience may be obtained through on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the full lifecycle of software development from architecture and design through integration, test, and field support.
  • Develop software applications for advanced systems that process modern communications for the U.S. Government.
  • Work with a product lead and cross‑disciplinary teams to establish approaches, code reviews, and testing support.

This position will be staffed in Annapolis Junction, MD. Our team has a need for a Software Engineer who is inspired by a job that challenges them to be proactive, make decisions, and generate ideas that drive product development to greater heights.

Responsibilities span the full lifecycle of product development, from architecture and design, through integration, test, and field support. You will contribute to the build, test, and delivery of a set of software applications to be deployed to advanced systems that process modern communications for the U.S. Government.

The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of concepts related to standard programming practices, software architecture, and networking. Work on complex technical problems while participating on collaborative, cross-disciplined integrated product teams.

Work will be performed with guidance of a product lead and team members who will assist in establishing an approach, perform code review and support in testing.

What You Will Learn

How to collaborate productively and professionally in a team-based development environment using disciplined engineering processes.

How to develop code with the larger end product and customers in mind.

Exposure to large code bases and toolsets like Jira, Confluence, Git, and Docker.

Qualifications

Must be pursuing a Bachelor's or advanced degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) major and actively enrolled through the completion of the internship/co-op session.

Experience developing in C++ in a Linux environment.

Experience with one or more scripting languages, Python, Linux script, Bash.

Experience may be obtained through on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects.

Qualifications We Prefer

Experience with Object Oriented Design and Development.

Software development experience (i.e. internship, co-op, or other work or academic project experience).

Experience working both in a team environment and individually.

Experience Rust.

Experience with Qt.

Experience with User Interface development.

Experience with Angular web GUI development.

Experience with Multithreading Embedded SW Design.

Experience in integrating software with hardware.

Experience with Configuration Management tools, such as git.

Experience maintaining and using build processes (makefiles, CMake).

Experience and/or knowledge of network protocols, such as TCP/IP.

Experience with or basic understanding of telecommunications systems concepts and/or signal processing.

Experience with Network Protocols.

Experience with or basic understanding of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Standards.

The salary range for this role is 42,000 USD - 88,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
