Job summary

Barclays is seeking a Principal Wallet Security Engineer – Digital Assets to define and deliver security architecture for Barclays' wallet platform, enabling secure custody, transfer, and settlement of digital assets across permissioned networks and open blockchains. You will lead cryptographic signing workflows, key management, and policy controls across multi‑supplier stacks in a regulated environment.

Join Barclays at the ground floor of a 0-to-1 build as a Principal Wallet Security Engineer – Digital Assets. You will define and deliver the security architecture for Barclays' wallet platform, establishing the cryptographic trust foundation that enables clients to securely hold, control, transfer, and settle digital assets across both permissioned financial networks and open blockchain ecosystems. This role is responsible for securing the wallet infrastructure, signing services, key management capabilities, and transaction authorization controls that support tokenized deposits, stablecoins, digital cash, tokenized securities, and future digital asset products. Working across engineering, cyber security, infrastructure, risk, and architecture teams, you will help build a secure, resilient, and regulated institutional-grade wallet platform that serves as the gateway between Barclays' core banking ecosystem and emerging digital asset networks.

To be successful as a Principal Wallet Security Engineer – Digital Assets, you should:
  • Bring proven experience designing and securing institutional wallet platforms, including transaction authorization, policy controls, delegated approvals, and cryptographic signing workflows supporting digital asset custody and settlement
  • Have deep expertise with Hardware Security Modules (HSMs), Multi-Party Computation (MPC), enterprise key management, and secure signing architectures that protect private keys and signing events across multiple blockchain networks
  • Demonstrate hands‑on experience implementing key lifecycle controls, secrets management, certificate and PKI services, network segmentation, privileged access management, and infrastructure hardening within highly regulated environments
  • Be comfortable leading threat modeling, attack‑path analysis, residual risk assessments, and security architecture reviews across complex multi‑supplier technology stacks and third‑party digital asset infrastructure
  • Apply secure‑by‑design engineering practices throughout the platform lifecycle, including resilience engineering, security testing, vulnerability management, operational readiness, control automation, and continuous assurance
Other Highly Valued Skills Include
  • Experience securing wallet infrastructure supporting tokenized deposits, stablecoins, tokenized securities, and other institutional digital asset use cases across open and permissioned networks
  • Knowledge of blockchain transaction flows, wallet policy engines, custody operating models, transaction orchestration, digital asset settlement workflows, and cryptographic authorization controls
  • Understanding of financial services regulatory expectations, operational resilience requirements, audit and assurance processes, and control‑by‑design technology delivery practices
  • Experience with cloud and on‑premises security architectures, Kubernetes, container security, Zero Trust principles, identity and access management, and secure connectivity patterns
Purpose of the role

To develop, and evolve the banks technology architecture through relevant solutions, strategies and execution plans aligned to and prioritized by business and technology objectives, including the development, evolution and adoption of foundational platforms and products.

Accountabilities
  • Development, evolution and implementation of the banks technology architecture and strategies aligned to the business and technology objectives, unlocking execution and run.
  • Collaboration with stakeholders, including Enterprise Architecture teams and other developers to provide subject matter expertise and share knowledge to foster continuous improvement, and clients to understand and deliver on their technical needs.
  • Motivation and leadership of a diverse collection of technologists, business and operations teams and enterprise leaders, with goal to align business & technology strategy & standards, identifying opportunities and connecting people.
  • Assessment of new technologies to address current and future business needs, through a combination of curiosity and problem‑solving skills.
  • Determination of the optimal solutions while balancing continuous requirements imposed by compliance, governance, security and funding, through deep understanding of the business and customer outcomes and maintaining a strong and steady grasp on the underlying technologies.
  • Monitoring and analysis of the performance, resiliency and stability of applications to identify and resolve issues and communicate and document key findings to stakeholders.
  • Compliance with applicable regulatory standards and identification of industry developments that may impact the banks operations and controls to enhance the banks application portfolio.
  • Support of engineering and architecture community initiatives to mentor team members, streamline operations, share and grow knowledge.

  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up‑to‑date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
