Job summary

USAA seeks a Senior Software Engineer to join a Scrum team, embedded in mortgage transformation across Blend and Empower. You will design, implement, test, and support scalable solutions to deliver a modern lending experience for military members and their families.

Lead with integrity, mentor peers, and help shape the domain architecture while operating in a fast-paced, hybrid office environment based in San Antonio, TX or Plano, TX with 4 days in the office.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of software development experience in enterprise platform engineering.

• Engineering expert on either the Blend Point of Sale Platform or the Dark Matter Empower LOS Platform including core installation, integration, and end-to-end testing.
• Strong hands-on experience across UI, APIs, backend services, and data integration.
• Experience influencing tech integration and modernization across multiple Agile Scrum teams.
• Experience designing and maintaining complex software solutions with multiple stakeholders.
• Experience integrating AI capabilities in enterprise apps with security and compliance.
• Knowledge of AI patterns such as RAG, knowledge retrieval, vector search, AI agents.

The Opportunity

Join a high-visibility mortgage transformation building the target-state lending experience from the ground up. Blend will power the member-facing mortgage application, while Empower will support loan origination through closing. As a Senior Software Engineer embedded within a Scrum team, you will provide hands-on expertise in one of these platforms, including configuration, customization, integrations, data movement, end-to-end testing, and production support.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX or Plano, TX. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you'll do

Design, develop, code, and test complex tactical as well as strategic technical solutions across many technologies, including emerging technologies, to integrate existing systems and tools, collaborating with Engineers or Architects within their team/department and occasionally outside of their domain.

Lead code/design reviews and communicates updates to stakeholders with team to ensure smooth daily operations and accurate planning.

Develop complex algorithms to solve business needs.

Investigates and resolves complex application and system technical problems and production issues by directing troubleshooting of end-to-end solutions.

Mentors engineers, coaches engineers on design, development, and maintenance of systems; Reviews teammates' code.

Influence and help shape the future of their specific domain's architecture and quality standards and understand, identify, measure across entire solution.

Identify system performance issues, to include technical debt, and optimize solution.

Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have

6 years of software development experience demonstrating deep technical expertise in enterprise platform engineering and systems integration.

4 years of experience delivering technology solutions in all phases of the

Engineering expert on either the Blend Point of Sale Platform or the Dark Matter Empower LOS Platform to include core installation experience, integration into a digital experience, vendor/batch management, customization strategies, ongoing maintenance/support, and end to end testing/quality assurance.

Strong hands-on engineering experience across the full technology stack, including: Responsive Web UI applications, APIs and backend services, Event-driven and data integration platforms.

Experience influencing technology integration, solution design, and modernization execution across multiple Agile Scrum teams.

Experience designing, developing, and maintaining a complex software solution involving multiple stakeholders.

Experience integrating AI capabilities into enterprise applications while maintaining security, compliance, scalability, observability, and operational support requirements. Familiarity with AI architecture patterns such as RAG, knowledge retrieval, vector search, AI agents, and model orchestration frameworks.

What sets you apart

Expertise in Golang, Java, Python, C++, or similar. Also, proficiency in multiple technologies and database platforms.

Deep knowledge and understanding of Cloud based development tools and processes, preferably on AWS.

Solid hands-on experience with Spring, Spring Boot, and RESTful web services.

Deep understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems.

Proven experience in building real-time streaming applications with Apache Kafka.

Strong experience in SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra, etc.).

Strong understanding and application of TDD and BDD methodologies.

Solid understanding of software design patterns and system architecture.
