This role builds the decision models behind a robot-run circuit board factory: scheduling orders and machines, simulating how work moves through the line, costing and pricing jobs, and deciding what parts to stock. A strong candidate has a quantitative background with real optimisation and simulation work that changed actual decisions, plus Python and SQL solid enough for others to depend on. Curiosity about physical manufacturing matters, since the models must match what happens on the factory floor.

How it fits the AI era

Coding agents are part of the daily toolset here, so the engineer directs them and stays accountable for the output. The judgement about which model fits a messy factory problem, and when a simple rule beats a solver, remains human. Models also have to be checked against what actually happened, which keeps the work grounded in reality rather than theory.
