Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is seeking a Software Functional Manager for the MDC2 family of programs located in Melbourne, FL. The role blends functional management (mentoring, quarterly reviews, hiring support, performance management) with direct technical contribution on software development for mission applications. The candidate will spend 15–20% of time on management activities and 80–85% on software engineering, including C++ coding to NGAS/MDC2 standards, unit and integration testing, and documentation.


Responsibilities


  • Day‑to‑day communications, performance assessment, employee counseling, professional development, rewards, and personnel issue resolution.

  • Recruiting, interviewing, hiring and recommending employees for raises and promotions.

  • Provide periodic 1‑on‑1 performance feedback and scheduled appraisals.

  • Coach and mentor engineers across all career stages.

  • Ensure project requirements have adequate statements of work to optimize contract performance.

  • Work with program management and IPT leads to establish personal, program and functional goals, and perform performance evaluations and merit adjustments.

  • Create and review software work items on a cross‑discipline team.

  • Support business acquisition, proposal, and special projects.

  • Assist in staff workload forecast preparation.

  • Identify and implement new or improved tools and processes to increase efficiency.

  • Acquire necessary tools and equipment for the team.

  • Perform program‑related duties such as CAM, earned‑value activities, technical planning, system integration, verification, validation, cost and risk analysis, and effectiveness analyses.

  • Create, review, and maintain critical documentation.


Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s in STEM with 9years of relevant software experience, or Master’s with 7years, or PhD with 5years.

  • Familiarity with all phases of the software development life cycle.

  • Prior leadership or management experience in a team environment.

  • Experience in C/C++, C#, Ada, Java, or similar languages.

  • Formal software requirements development and sign‑off experience.

  • Experience with test automation tools and frameworks; development and deployment of automated test frameworks.

  • Experience creating and maintaining a DevOps CI/CD pipeline and associated tools.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance (interim Secret required).

  • Preferred: Master’s in computer science or engineering.

  • Strong analytical skills for diagnosing/triaging production systems.

  • Experience briefing senior customers and internal executive management.

  • Familiarity with Cameo, Atlassian tools (Jira, Bitbucket, Confluence, Crucible, Bamboo), and DOORS.

  • Excellent oral and written communication and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Hold an active U.S. government Top Secret or higher clearance and Program Access clearance if applicable.
