Job summary

Northstrat is seeking a Software Engineer to design, develop, and implement complex Java-based software capabilities for computer systems. You will work with a talented team to deliver high-quality software solutions for clients in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• Requires at least 9 years in Software Engineering with modern Java frameworks.
• Experience building and maintaining Kubernetes deployments using helm and flux.
• Strong Java software development experience and API design.
• Experience with RESTful web services and microservices architecture.
• Familiarity with Linux and configuration management tools (Git, Nexus, Maven).
• Proven leadership or mentoring experience in engineering teams.

As a Software Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing complex software capabilities for computer-based systems. Essential Job Responsibilities

• Must have a strong working knowledge and experience developing Java based software capabilities.
• Should have an inquisitive nature, responsiveness, and excellent testing skills.
• Must also possess strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work under pressure with multiple deadlines.
• Keep up-to-date with emerging trends and technologies in software development.
• Will work in a fast-paced, small business environment with our talented team.
• Seamlessly transition between hands-on execution and team guidance, treating mentorship and team leadership as inherent components of senior-level impact.

Requirements

• A current U.S. Government Security Clearance is desired but not required; U.S. Citizenship required. Can also consider candidates with a current Secret or TS level clearance.
• Must have at least 9 years' experience in Software Engineering, Modern Java Frameworks and Libraries (e.g. Spring, Guava) Bachelors in related field; 7 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 13 years relevant experience.
• Required experience building and maintaining Kubernetes deployments using tools like helm and flux.
• Must have a strong Java software development experience.
• Experience in designing enterprise APIs.
• Experience in RESTful web services.
• Must be experienced in Microservices architecture.
• Should have experience with the agile software lifecycle.
• Has a proven ability to learn quickly and works well both independently as well as in a team setting.
• Experience with the Linux operating system.
• Experience with configuration management tools (e.g. Git, Nexus, Maven).
• Demonstrated experience serving as a tech lead, mentor, or manager for engineering teams.
• Must be able to work in a hybrid environment, spending an average of 1-2 days per week at our Columbia, MD office and/or 1-2 days per week at our customer site. Flexibility is essential to adapt to schedule changes as needed.

Preferred Requirements

• Experience in cloud-based technologies (AWS, Azure) desired.
• Desired experience designing and writing custom kubernetes tooling like operators and custom CRDs.
• Preferred experience with programming languages such as golang and python.
• Experience with writing automation in CI/CD tooling such as gitlabs CI pipelines.
• Experience in distributed databases, NoSQL databases, full text-search engines (e.g. Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Solr).
• Scripting experience is a huge plus.
• Prior experience or familiarity with our Big Data Platform is a plus.
• Understanding of AGILE software development methodologies and use of standard software development tool suites. (e.g., JIRA, Confluence, Github Enterprise, etc.)

Pay Range

There are a host of factors that can influence final salary including, but not limited to, geographic location, Federal Government contract labor categories and contract wage rates, relevant prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education, and certifications. Flex Time

Northstrat does not mandate specific working hours. Although project requirements may dictate schedules, a Northstrat employee is only required to work an average of 8 hours per weekday over the course of a month. For example: John worked 12 hours on June 1st to meet a project deadline. On June 15th, John only worked 4 hours because he left early for a long weekend. John's IBA was not debited for time off because flex time allowed him to carry over those 4 hours from June 1st.

Individual Benefits Account (IBA)

To attract and retain the highest quality staff, Northstrat provides a unique and versatile benefits package, the Individual Benefit Account (IBA), which places the power of choice in the hands of our greatest asset - the employee. The purpose of the IBA is to provide attractive benefits to all full-time employees of Northstrat on a flexible basis that enables each covered employee to select a package that best suits his or her needs. Profit Sharing Plan (PSP)

The PSP is a qualified retirement plan that Northstrat funds quarterly on the employee's behalf through the IBA in the amount equivalent to 25% (up to the IRS contribution limit) of the employee's compensation. That is, of the 50% accrual in the IBA, half of the amount accrued is applied to the PSP.
