We are looking for a Backend Software Engineer III to join our Address Validation, Tracking, and Pickups team!

This team develops new features, builds infrastructure, and maintains current services. You will become a domain expert on Shippo’s approach to:

1. Sending updates to customers about package statuses
2. Validating address locations worldwide

Shipping & Handling Responsibilities:

• Implement, test, and deploy high-SLA software services capable of handling millions of requests daily, using a BDD approach.
• Verify system performance and correctness in response time and throughput.
• Refactor existing systems for optimal performance and reuse.
• Participate in design reviews, peer reviews, and develop automated test suites for new features, products, and systems.
• Work with urgency and iterate quickly within an Agile environment.
• Demonstrate exceptional problem-solving skills by translating business challenges into technical solutions.
• Join the on-call rotation and respond promptly to system incidents.

Do you tick the boxes?

• 6+ years in software development.
• Proficiency in at least one server-side language (e.g., Python, Go, Java, Ruby) and SQL.
• Experience with server-side MVC frameworks (e.g., Django, .NET, Spring, Rails, Phoenix).
• Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and architectural patterns.
• Ability to anticipate opportunities, foster innovation, and build for scale.
• High ownership, system reliability focus, and monitoring skills.
• Core behaviors centered on craftsmanship, continuous improvement, and team success.
• BSc or MSc in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Bonus

• Experience with shipping or postal carriers.
• API integration experience with SOAP or gRPC.
• Familiarity with Django or FastAPI.
• Experience deploying Python or Golang at scale.
• Interest in performance tuning, concurrency, microservices, security, and data analytics.
• Experience with messaging systems like NSQ, Kafka, SQS, and Celery.
• Experience with DevOps tools such as Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, CircleCI, GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, New Relic, PagerDuty.
• Experience with AWS/Cloud services like EC2, S3, DynamoDB, Lambda, Route 53, CloudFormation, Cloudflare, Elastic Beanstalk, IAM.

Compensation and Benefits:

$133,000 - $181,000 a year

Our Compensation Policy:

We believe in fair, equitable pay, typically anchoring salaries around the midpoint of the range ($157k). Pay varies based on experience, skills, and location, with different ranges for the US and high-cost areas like NYC and California. Total compensation includes salary, equity, and benefits.
