Job summary

Avalon Healthcare Solutions is seeking a Software Engineer III to join a senior technical team building scalable software for health plan operations. You will own features end-to-end, mentor juniors, and collaborate with product and design partners while staying hands-on with code.

This role supports remote work with quarterly travel to Avalon's Tampa corporate office, and requires strong expertise in Java/Go/TypeScript, RESTful services, CI/CD, Docker, and Kubernetes.

Qualifications

  • Advanced proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Java, Go, or TypeScript.
  • Deep understanding of relational and non-relational databases and data modeling.
  • Expert-level experience with Git and source control workflows.
  • Proficient in configuring and optimizing development environments and tooling.
  • Strong experience designing and integrating web services and APIs (RESTful and event-driven).
  • Comfortable with Linux-based environments and deployment pipelines.
  • Deep understanding of Agile methodologies and full SDLC; experience leading technical discussions.
  • Hands-on with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI).
  • Containerization and orchestration with Docker and Kubernetes; deployment and monitoring.
  • Strong secure coding, performance, and reliability principles.
  • Ability to mentor engineers and influence architectural decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of scalable, high-quality software aligned with business goals.

About the Software Engineer III Position:

As a Software Engineer III at Avalon, you’ll serve as a senior technical contributor within your team, leading the design and development of scalable, high-quality software solutions that support our business goals. You’ll take ownership of complex features and projects, guiding them from concept to delivery while ensuring technical excellence and alignment with team objectives.

While your primary focus will remain within your team, you may occasionally take on project lead responsibilities—coordinating efforts, aligning timelines, and ensuring successful delivery in collaboration with product and design partners. You’ll also work closely with our principal engineers and architects to help shape technical direction, contribute to architectural discussions, and ensure consistency across systems.

You’ll be a key voice in mentoring junior and mid-level engineers, conducting thoughtful code reviews, and championing best practices in software development. This is an opportunity to deepen your technical leadership, influence the evolution of our systems, and contribute meaningfully to a collaborative and innovative engineering culture—all while staying hands-on with code and close to the team’s day-to-day work.

This position is eligible for remote work, but quarterly travel will be required to Avalon's corporate office located in Tampa, Florida.

Software Engineer III – Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of scalable, high-quality software solutions that align with business goals and technical strategy.
  • Take ownership of complex features and projects, guiding them from planning through implementation, testing, and deployment.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to define technical requirements and ensure successful project delivery.
  • Contribute to architectural discussions and decisions, working closely with principal engineers and architects to ensure consistency and long-term maintainability.
  • Serve as a technical mentor to junior and mid-level engineers, providing guidance, sharing knowledge, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Conduct and lead code reviews, promoting best practices in code quality, testing, and maintainability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex application and integration issues, contributing to root cause analysis and long-term solutions.
  • Actively participate in all phases of Avalon’s Agile Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including sprint planning, backlog refinement, and retrospectives.
  • Occasionally take on project lead responsibilities, coordinating technical efforts within the team and ensuring alignment with timelines and deliverables.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of how technical solutions support business operations and contribute to strategic goals.
  • Build and apply deep domain knowledge of health plan operations and related systems to inform technical decisions.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation to support critical software systems, demonstrating leadership and accountability for production stability.

Software Engineer III – Minimum Qualifications:

Technical Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Java, Go, or TypeScript, with a strong focus on writing clean, maintainable, and scalable code.
  • Deep understanding of relational and non-relational databases, with experience optimizing complex queries and contributing to data modeling decisions.
  • Expert-level experience with Git and source control workflows, including managing complex merges, resolving conflicts, and guiding branching strategies.
  • Proficient in configuring and optimizing development environments and tooling to support team productivity and consistency.
  • Strong experience designing and integrating web services and APIs, including RESTful and event-driven architectures; familiarity with service versioning, security, and documentation standards.
  • Comfortable working in Linux-based environments, with the ability to automate tasks, troubleshoot system-level issues, and support deployment pipelines.
  • Deep understanding of Agile methodologies and the full SDLC, with experience leading technical discussions during sprint planning, retrospectives, and backlog refinement.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI, including pipeline design, testing strategies, and deployment automation.

Software Engineer III – Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience designing, building, and consuming RESTful services and APIs, with a strong understanding of scalability, versioning, and security best practices.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, including designing and deploying cloud-native applications using services like S3, EC2, Lambda, IAM, and managed databases.
  • Proficiency in front-end development using modern frameworks such as React or Next.js, with a strong grasp of component-based architecture, state management, and responsive design using CSS/SASS, Material UI, and/or Bootstrap.
  • Advanced programming skills in one or more languages such as Java, Go, or TypeScript, with a focus on building maintainable, performant, and testable systems.
  • Deep understanding of unit, integration, and end-to-end testing practices, with hands-on experience using testing frameworks such as JUnit, Jest, Mocha, or Playwright.
  • Experience designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines and contributing to DevOps practices that support reliable and efficient software delivery.
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and their role in scalable application deployment.
  • Experience working in regulated industries or with sensitive data, with a strong understanding of data privacy and security standards such as HIPAA, PHI, and IIHI.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and support the technical growth of peers, and to contribute to architectural discussions and team-wide engineering standards
