  • Delivery: Ability to estimate complex engineering work and understand the components required to deploy, release, monitor, and support production software.
  • Experience with cloud-native architectures and engineering platforms such as Azure, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, containerization, observability tooling, or infrastructure-as-code is preferred.
  • Understanding of secure software development practices in a compliance-driven environment is preferred; experience with standards such as NERC CIP or SOC 1 is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, deploy, operate, and modernize reliable Java/Spring Boot applications in data-intensive, mission-critical, and compliance-driven environments, including legacy systems, APIs, databases, cloud and container platforms, automated testing, and CI/CD.
  • Determine the technical approach for complex features, accounting for functional and non-functional requirements such as security, reliability, performance, maintainability, data integrity, and operability.
  • Serve as the technical lead for assigned features by refining requirements and acceptance criteria, estimating complex work, coordinating implementation, and supporting successful deployment and release.
  • Partner within cross-functional product teams including engineering, product management, architecture, business subject-matter experts, data teams, and external partners to clarify evolving requirements, evaluate technical tradeoffs, and move valuable work forward.

Job description

MISO is hiring a Software Engineer III. You’ll take a hands‑on role in building reliable, scalable systems that keep our grid running smoothly. You’ll design and develop software from the ground up, enhance existing applications, dive into code reviews, and help drive high‑quality engineering practices. If you enjoy working across the full development lifecycle and want to contribute to meaningful, real‑world impact, you’ll feel right at home here.

Why Join MISO?

  • Contribute to the engineering behind MISO’s $10B capacity market by building and modernizing interconnected systems, ensuring regulatory compliance, data accuracy, and reliable integrations across the Resource Adequacy domain.
  • Apply and advance AI‑native engineering practices while using strong Java expertise to deliver high‑value solutions in a complex, mission‑critical environment.
  • Work on real‑world projects that impact the power industry and ensure energy reliability.
  • Be part of a strong, collaborative engineering culture across MISO’s locations, where software professionals solve meaningful technical and industry challenges.
  • Collaborate with experienced product owners, architects, system engineers, support professionals, and other software engineers, influencing all aspects of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).

Your Responsibilities As Our Software Engineer III Include:

  • Design, build, test, deploy, operate, and modernize reliable Java/Spring Boot applications in data-intensive, mission‑critical, and compliance-driven environments, including legacy systems, APIs, databases, cloud and container platforms, automated testing, and CI/CD.
  • Partner within cross‑functional product teams including engineering, product management, architecture, business subject‑matter experts, data teams, and external partners to clarify evolving requirements, evaluate technical tradeoffs, and move valuable work forward.
  • Apply generative AI throughout the software development lifecycle including design, implementation, testing, code review, documentation, and troubleshooting to accelerate delivery and improve quality.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields (or equivalent experience) with 5+ years of experience.
  • Java/Spring Boot: Demonstrated ability to independently design, develop, debug, test, deploy, and support production applications.
  • AI-native engineering: Experience applying tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or similar AI‑assisted development platforms across implementation, testing, review, documentation, and troubleshooting workflows.
  • Demonstrated judgment in validating AI-generated output and applying applicable security, privacy, intellectual‑property, and governance practices.
  • Git and CI/CD: Proficiency with collaborative branching, pull requests, code reviews, conflict resolution, automated builds, testing, and deployment workflows.
  • APIs and integration: Experience designing, consuming, testing, monitoring, and troubleshooting service contracts and system integrations.
  • Databases/data: SQL, schemas, data quality, and transaction/integration concepts matter more than one specific product
  • Technical decision‑making: Experience evaluating technical alternatives and non‑functional requirements to determine an appropriate implementation approach for complex features.
  • Delivery: Ability to estimate complex engineering work and understand the components required to deploy, release, monitor, and support production software.
  • Experience with cloud-native architectures and engineering platforms such as Azure, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, containerization, observability tooling, or infrastructure‑as‑code is preferred.
  • Understanding of secure software development practices in a compliance‑driven environment is preferred; experience with standards such as NERC CIP or SOC 1 is beneficial.
