Job description

About This Role

This Software Engineering role is within Textron Systems’ Uncrewed Land and Air Systems division. Our team is engaged in multiple cutting‑edge development programs for defense applications. A strong candidate will have a history of software development for robotic and autonomous applications, including software/hardware interface development, software integration, and experience working in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities
  • Provide engineering support for both current and next‑generation technologies in support of our family of uncrewed ground and air products.
  • Work on entire systems ranging from the vehicle platforms to their control stations.
  • Participate in software development of new products across all phases of the product lifecycle from concept to lab and off‑site integration and evaluation.
  • Estimate, design, implement, review, test, document, and release software.
  • Take technical leadership and ownership of software components and systems.
  • Integrate internal and third‑party software solutions into our products.
  • Interface directly with customers.
  • Collaborate with the software engineering team and other engineering disciplines to create functional systems.
  • Mentor other team members.
  • Perform trade studies.
  • Support on‑site and off‑site integration and test activities.
  • Drive process improvement initiatives.
  • Potentially lead software development efforts.
  • Estimate scope, manage tasks, generate assignments, and report status.
  • Potentially attend industry conferences/events to gauge competition and find new opportunities.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field with 5+ years of experience, or a master’s degree with 2+ years of experience. Additional required skills/experience:
  • Understanding of robotics systems including sensors, actuators, mechanical components, algorithms, and software systems.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ programming.
  • Proficiency with Unix‑based operating systems.
  • Proficiency with shell scripting.
  • Knowledge of Object‑Oriented Analysis (OOA)/Object‑Oriented Design (OOD).
  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Git or Mercurial.
  • Effective writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience interacting directly with customers.
  • Ability to work in teams and independently with minimal direction.
  • Traveling up to 15% of the time.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Secret Clearance.

Preferred:

  • Professional experience in autonomous driving/flight or robotics industry with software/system integration and on‑field testing.
  • Experience with integrating or designing autonomous solutions for land and/or air platforms.
  • Experience with MicroPilot’s autopilot software.
  • Experience with MOOS DA/IVP.
  • Experience with Qt projects/libraries.
  • Experience with OpenDDS.
  • Experience with containerization platforms such as Docker.
  • Experience with Network/Serial/CAN interface development.
  • Experience with front‑end technologies including CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, REST API, SQL or NoSQL databases, and web UI design.
  • Experience with automation build servers such as Jenkins.
  • Experience with workflow management tools such as Jira.
  • Experience with static code analysis tools such as Coverity.
  • Experience developing MCP Servers and MCP Tools for use with LMMs.
  • Experience with AI software development and workflow tools.
  • Experience with MIL‑STD‑882E software development.
  • Experience with UML or MBSE tools like MagicDraw.
