What’s the role?

We are looking for an expert engineer to join our Inventory Personalization and Customization team! This web-focused team is part of the Buyer Experience Initiative, and is dedicated to developing features that improve clarity and interaction with listings which offer both personalized and customized options.

As a Senior Software Engineer II on our team, you will be responsible for:

• Building and maintaining software written in PHP and React/Typescript
• Close attention to detail, with the ability to translate design and product requirements to production-ready code
• Strong communication that adapts to technical and non-technical audiences
• Consistently and proactively breaking down large features into multiple stages for delivery
• Identifying and resolving difficult architectural and technical trade-offs
• Collaborate with teammates across various subject areas, including engineering, product management, product design, and data analytics

This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What does the day-to-day look like?

• Build solutions to help our nearly 100M buyers discover items from Etsy’s outstanding and diverse listing's inventory for their personalized shopping missions
• Set technical direction for your teammates, as a tech lead
• Mentor and guide junior and senior engineers.
• Collaborate across Product, Design, Analysts, Researchers, and Engineering to build innovative and delightful web experiences
• Build high-quality end to end product features in a fast paced agile environment
• Accurately estimate timelines for strategic delivery of work
• Run A/B experiments to validate product improvements
• Confidently communicate technical issues with all vital stakeholders. This includes quickly owning and addressing critical issues which your team owns, even if there is no clear individual owner
• Craft and improve processes that positively impact your team
• Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change occasionally at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• At least 5+ years of professional writing and deploying full-stack web software in any of the following languages: PHP, Python, Ruby, Java, Go, and/or JavaScript, ideally in a product-minded environment
• An interest in solving user problems and driving business impact through high-quality, maintainable, and readable code
• Successful track record of planning and leading projects to completion
• Experience building web technologies and working on large scale, high performance and fault tolerant systems
• Collaborative attitude, comfortable working with a diverse range of roles and departments
• Experience leading, mentoring, and coaching other engineers at a variety of levels throughout their career in a conscientious manner
• A strong sense of self-direction, with the ability to navigate ambiguity, identify the best technical paths, and quickly acquire new knowledge to drive impactful solutions.
• Experience collaborating with cross-functional partners (engineers, product managers, product designers, researchers, and analysts)
