Job summary

Torc Robotics in the United States is seeking a Mission Interface Software Engineer to develop production-grade C++ software for the autonomous truck stack, enabling Mission Control and Remote Assistance to interact with the vehicle's software.

You will mentor peers, translate system requirements into scalable architectures, and collaborate across back-office, perception, controls, and safety teams while advancing automated trucking for safe, long-haul freight.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a technical field (CS/Robotics/EE) with relevant competences.
  • Strong C++ programming skills for real-time, safety-critical apps.
  • Knowledge of vehicle dynamics and kinematic models.
  • Ability to write clean, maintainable, tested code and document solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement interfaces between Autonomy and Mission Control/Remote Assistance systems.
  • Lead real-time C++ software components for vehicle guidance and status monitoring.
  • Translate system requirements into scalable architectures and verification artifacts.
  • Contribute to simulation and testing frameworks for algorithm validation across ODDS.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure end-to-end system integration.
  • Mentor peers through code reviews and best practices.
  • Incorporate ML techniques for planning and routing where appropriate.
  • Drive software quality and safety in production releases.

TheMission InterfaceSoftwareEngineer plays a key role in deliveringVehicle Intentsoftwareinto the automated driving system at Torc.This role focuses on developing high-quality, production-ready software that enablesour Mission Control andRemote Assistance teams to interact withtheself-drivingtruck’ssoftware stackcapabilities.In this position, youare expected todemonstratetechnical leadership, operate with a high degree of autonomy, and drive cross-team initiatives across software, systems, and product domains.The software developed in this role directly enablescommunicationwithandcommand overourvehicles to sense their surroundings, respond intelligentlywhen necessary, and help keepthe system operatingsafely—advancingTorc’s mission tocommercialize self-driving trucks for safe, sustained, long-haul innovation in the freight industry.

WhatYou’llDo
  • Design, implement, andoptimizesoftware that createsthe interface betweenAutonomyand the Mission Control, Remote Assistance,RouteAdvisor,and On Truck Managementsystems to allow formissionmanagementfrom planning,initiating,andupdating missions to trackingprogressandmonitoringperformance throughtelemetry

  • Leadthe development ofreal-timeC++ software components thatthatenable vehicle guidance and status monitoring of the self-driving truck

  • Translate system-level requirements into robust, scalable software architectures and algorithmsthroughcorrespondingcomponentlevelrequirements andverificationartifacts

  • Contribute to simulation and testing frameworks for validation of algorithms under diverse operational design domains (ODDs)

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (back office,perception,controls, safety) to ensure end-to-end system integration

  • Mentor and guidepeersthrough technical reviews, best practices, and hands-on collaboration

  • Stay current with researchinglobal route planningandanalytical planning methods.Contribute to integration of machine learning techniques whereappropriate (e.g.,route-rerouting,learned cost models, behavior prediction, reinforcement learning for tactical decision making).

  • Drive continuous improvement in software quality, safety, performance, and development processes

  • Support safety-critical development practices aligned with automotive standards and production release requirements

  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

WhatYou’llNeed to Succeed
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering or related technical field plusdemonstratescompetences and technicalproficienciestypicallyacquiredthrough 4+ years of experience or;

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering or related technical field plusdemonstratescompetences and technicalproficienciestypicallyacquired through 1-3+ years of experience.

  • Strong C++ programming skills (C++14/17 or later) with experience in real-time, safety-critical, or high-performance applications

  • Knowledge of vehicle dynamics and kinematic models (e.g., bicycle model, Ackermann steering, dynamic feasibility)

  • Ability to write clean, maintainable, and testable code with an emphasis on software engineering best practices

  • 5+years experiencewith the architecting, design, and implementation of embedded software solutionsleveragingthese aspects:

  • Producing scalable code in C++

  • Optimizing code for speed, memory usage, etc.

  • Validating the solutionsby means ofunit and/or systems level testing

  • Creating technical documentation to communicate solutions

Bonus Points
  • Familiarity withfundamentalAV/ADAScomponentsandconcepts.

  • Experience with observability and visualization platforms (e.g., Datadog,Tableau, Foxglove) for telemetry monitoring, system performance analysis, or sensor/log data visualization

  • 2–5 years of professional Python development experiencedoingsolid, hands-on Python development, including writing production-quality code, code reviews, and working within a larger codebase

  • Experience withrobotic/autonomous frameworks (ROS/ROS2,Autoware, Apollo, etc.)andcommunication protocols like CAN and Ethernet

  • Understanding of safetyand software engineeringstandards (ISO 26262, SOTIF, ASPICE, CMMI) and validation methodologies

  • Can execute testing on various test platforms: software in the loop, hardware in the loop, andvehicle testing

  • Research/industry experience in robotics or autonomy.
