Overview:
The ABC Experience Delivery team is responsible for powering the guest experience for the suite of ABC News digital products across web, mobile and living room devices. These products provide national news coverage (i.e. abcnews.com) as well cover local news in key geographies such as Los Angeles, New York City, Fresno, San Francisco, Chicago, Durham, Philadelphia and Houston. We build the core data services and APIs that power the applications and services used by ABC News guests as they browse the digital portfolio. Our challenge is to provide low latency and high availability at scale for millions of users, with a technology stack that can keep up with our constantly growing customer base.
As a Software Engineer II, you will collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and product managers to find the best solution for our guests. You will drive projects end-to-end: designing the initial solution; finding alignment with technology and product teams; execution of the necessary code; and overseeing the deployment of code to production. Members of the team look to your code and documentation as examples of excellence. You value good-faith collaboration, driving best practices, and promoting excellence on your team. Responsibilities:
Participate in setting the architectural direction for software development projects.
Design new solutions and drive alignment across engineering and product teams.
Expertly break down work at the epic level, setting project milestones with reasonable deadlines.
Prioritize work within a project to deliver on the most necessary or urgent requirements. Anticipate and mitigate risk on projects.
Effectively communicate with stakeholders on project progress.
Write code that establishes and enhances frameworks and design proof of concepts.
Determine the most efficient means to sufficiently test new code: unit tests, integration tests, performance tests, etc.
Set best practices for the team for on-call responsibilities such as deployments, monitoring, and investigating incidents.
Use logs, monitoring tools etc. and work with developers to determine root causes across distributed components during production incidents.
Perform code reviews for members of the team, bearing a sense of responsibility for approved code.
Coach and mentor teammates in an open, respectful, flexible, empathetic manner. Help onboard new team members.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience.
3+ years of experience in building highly available architecture, shipping robust code and creating a positive team environment.
Experience crafting and operating large-scale, high-availability backend services using Java and/or Golang.
Deep understanding of and experience using caching technologies ( such as Redis, Memcached, EHcache ).
Demonstrated success in being part of a team problem-solving, designing and implementing software at scale.
Proven leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills, with the ability to inspire and empower a team towards achieving business goals.
Experience with performance tuning and building/maintaining software that is in the critical path.
Biased towards action, with experience delivering high-quality software solutions on time, at scale and within budget.
Experience using source control systems and CI/CD pipelines ( such as Git, Github, Jenkins ).
Experience with AGILE/Scrum practices.
Experience deploying and scaling within a cloud infrastructure preferably AWS.
Experience with observability tools for metrics, logging, and monitoring (such as New Relic Datadog, Grafana).
Strong communication skills and a desire to share your knowledge with team members and others across the ABC News org.
