Home Chef is hiring a Software Engineer II in Chicago. You will transform business problems into technical solutions, review peers’ work, and troubleshoot production issues. You’ll build features using Ruby on Rails, Postgres, and React Native for mobile platforms.

You’ll collaborate in a fast-paced, data-driven environment, contribute to product roadmaps, and own code quality while maintaining a customer-focused mindset. A strong emphasis on ownership and pragmatic thinking guides the team.

Qualifications

• At least one year of experience shipping production code.
• Built and shipped major features in Ruby on Rails and/or React.
• Comfortable working with GitHub for source control.
• Proficient with a code editor (VS Code, Sublime, Vim, etc.).
• Proficient with Slack and GSuite.
• Willing to respond to on-call events.
• SQL knowledge is a plus, not required.
• Experience with React Native and Heroku is a plus.
• Up to one year of post-high school training such as in business school or vocational training.

Responsibilities

• Write code to solve business problems and handle tickets using Ruby on Rails with a Postgres database.

Job description

A Software Engineer II at Home Chef is an experienced software developer who is proficient in the languages and frameworks commonly used at the company. In this role, you will leverage a deep understanding of the codebase to independently implement high-quality solutions, translating business problems into technical solutions. You will anticipate the cross-functional implications of your team's work and effectively communicate with team members and stakeholders. You will review the work of other engineers and provide constructive feedback, and investigate and troubleshoot production errors when required.

Writing code to solve business problems and handling tickets

• Utilize Ruby on Rails framework with a postgres database to complete feature development
• Demonstrate experience with backend development, design and implementation
• Demonstrate experience interacting with a database (relational, NoSQL, caching), feature implementation and optimization
• Ship and maintain reliable, scalable, efficient code
• Regularly troubleshoot and resolve production errors and identify root causes
• Develop mobile features for iOS and Android using React Native

Reviewing the work of teammates, collaborating with others

• Give actionable feedback to unblock peers and help your team deliver
• Contribute to discussions to influence the roadmap and product development of Home Chef tools
• Communicate and write code clearly while pair programming
• Communicate about the trade-offs of various technical approaches and solutions
• Regularly review the work of others on the team and provide directional feedback
• Participate in regular team meetings to help with product roadmap planning and team efficiency

Home Chef offers the base salary range as posted below, with the exact offer depending on factors such as geographic location, experience, skills, and internal equity. While compensation is within the provided range, it is not typical for offers to be made at the upper end. In addition to base salary, Home Chef provides a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare coverage, 401k match, and paid time off.
