About Fern

Fern helps software companies build a world-class API experience. In the next year, the majority of API integrations will be implemented by AI agents — and agents don't read marketing pages. They need strongly typed schemas, structured endpoints, deterministic contracts, and documentation that can be fed into a context window. The team is small and talent-dense, composed of builders from Google, Palantir, Amazon, and Uber, working together in New York City.

Core Responsibilities

In this full-time role, the selected engineer will build APIs, scale AI infrastructure, and design developer experiences that reach millions of users. Key focus areas include:

• Infrastructure Scaling: Working on AI systems deployed across Vercel, AWS, and Turbopuffer that must be performant, reliable, and secure under real-world load.
• Customer-Centric Development: Collaborating directly with API teams at companies like Nvidia, Twilio, and Square to debug real production edge cases, shape APIs based on customer feedback, and ship improvements quickly.
• Cross-Stack Collaboration: Partnering closely with product designers and frontend engineers working in TypeScript and Next.js to define polished interfaces and slick user experiences.

Key Qualifications

• Minimum of 2+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• A deep appreciation for taste and developer experience as a craft — Fern builds open source and cares deeply about quality.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills to solve technical problems with customers.
• Bonus: Experience building with TypeScript.

Compensation and Benefits

The reasonably estimated base salary for this role ranges from $160,000 to $190,000, plus a competitive equity package. Actual compensation is based on the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience.
