Job summary

Sapient Search is hiring a senior backend engineer to own core services in a fast-growing data startup. You will design domain-driven features, optimize queries, and build robust background workflows using Elixir and TypeScript.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience.
• 3+ years of production Elixir experience.
• Strong TypeScript expertise (Node.js services or full-stack).
• Solid command of TypeScript core features: generics, unions, utility types, async/await, Node.js event loop.
• Strong PostgreSQL expertise (query optimization, indexing, transactions, migrations).
• Experience with Ecto and Phoenix.
• Understanding of OTP principles (GenServer, Supervisor, Application).
• Experience with background job processing (Oban, Broadway, or similar).
• Familiarity with RESTful API design.
• Strong testing practices (ExUnit, property-based testing).

Responsibilities

• Design and implement features across domain-driven architecture (contexts, services, schemas).
• Build and optimize PostgreSQL queries, including read replicas for performance-critical paths.
• Develop background job workflows using Oban and Broadway/SQS pipelines.
• Integrate with external APIs and internal microservices.
• Contribute to Elixir & TypeScript services and tooling across Shared Services portfolio.
• Improve search functionality with OpenSearch.
• Implement caching strategies for high-traffic scenarios.
• Write comprehensive tests and maintain high code quality standards.
• Participate in code reviews and architectural discussions.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team best practices.

What You’ll Do

Requirements

Must Have

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience
• 3+ years of production Elixir experience
• Strong TypeScript expertise (Node.js services or full-stack)
• Solid command of TypeScript core features: type system (generics, unions, utility types), async/await and the Node.js event loop, and module/tooling ecosystem
• Strong PostgreSQL expertise (query optimization, indexing, transactions, migrations)
• Experience with Ecto and Phoenix
• Understanding of OTP principles (GenServer, Supervisor, Application)
• Experience with background job processing (Oban, Broadway, or similar)
• Familiarity with RESTful API design
• Strong testing practices (ExUnit, property-based testing)

Strongly Preferred

• Experience building e-commerce platforms or inventory management systems
• Understanding of marketplace dynamics (orders, listings, pricing, fulfillment)

Nice to Have

• Experience with distributed systems and clustering
• Familiarity with Datadog and OpenTelemetry
• Python experience: backend services, automation (a strong plus)

Education

• Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in a product, engineering, development, or technical delivery position.
• Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, Business, IT or related discipline
