Job description

  • ID.me is seeking a Software Engineer II to join the Developer Portal team, where we’re building the self-service platform that enables organizations to rapidly integrate ID.me
  • Identity proofing is fundamentally complex. Integrating an identity proofing flow requires many steps while meeting standards-body assurance requirements. The Developer Portal is the product that brings those pieces together for the external developer
  • Today, much of that onboarding is still performed manually by in-house Solutions Consultants who have many other responsibilities
  • Our mission is to enable customers and their developers to register their application, configure their identity needs, test in a production-like sandbox, and launch to production, all through a modern self-service experience
  • This is a backend-leaning full-stack role. You’ll work on the services, APIs, and data models behind the portal (application registration, authorization, and the developer-facing APIs our customers integrate against), and you’ll ship the user-facing surfaces those services power in our Next.js and React frontend
  • You’ll start with well-scoped features alongside senior engineers and grow quickly into owning features end-to-end, from API contract to production
  • Our backend services are primarily Java (Spring Boot) alongside legacy Ruby services
  • The frontend is a micro-frontend platform built with Next.js, React, and TypeScript. You don’t need to know all of these on day one. If your fundamentals are strong, we’re confident you’ll pick up whatever the problem requires
  • Build and Ship Developer Features:
  • Design, implement, test, and deploy Developer Portal capabilities across the stack: backend APIs, database changes, and the frontend experiences customers use. Start with well-defined features and bugs, then take on progressively larger and more ambiguous work as you grow
  • Write High-Quality, Well-Tested Code:
  • Write clean, readable, maintainable code with strong test coverage. Participate actively in code review, both getting feedback and giving thoughtful feedback to teammates, including senior engineers
  • Build AI-First:
  • Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) every day to move faster on implementation, testing, debugging, and understanding unfamiliar code. Help the team find better ways to use these tools, and hold AI-generated code to the same bar as code you wrote by hand
  • Learn the Identity Stack:
  • Build hands-on depth in authentication and authorization, including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, enterprise SSO, multi-tenant access control, and credential management, working with our Wallet, Organizations, and Platform Engineering teams
  • Operate What You Ship:
  • Help keep the systems our team owns healthy in production: monitoring, alerting, debugging live issues, and participating in on-call once you’re ramped up
  • Collaborate and Grow:
  • Work closely with Product, Design, and engineers across teams. Learn to break down problems, write short technical designs, and communicate clearly about tradeoffs and progress. You’ll have a dedicated mentor and a clear path toward end-to-end feature ownership
  • What Success Looks Like:
  • First 30 days: Your dev environment is set up, you’ve shipped your first production change, and you understand how the Developer Portal fits into ID.me’s identity platform
  • First 90 days: You’re independently delivering well-scoped features across backend and frontend, contributing meaningfully to code reviews, and using AI tooling to raise both your speed and your quality bar
  • First year: You own a meaningful Developer Portal capability end-to-end, from API contract and data model through production operation, and you’re a go-to person for at least one part of the system
Benefits
  • Company-Sponsored Medical, Dental, and Vision Plans for You and Your Family
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Generous Paid Time Off
  • 401K With Employer Matching
  • Company-Sponsored Life Insurance
  • Employee Equity Incentive Plan
  • Remote Opportunities
  • Multiple Lounge Areas and Game Room
  • Numerous Mental Health Resources

This is an early-career role for engineers who are 0 to 2 years into their career and write excellent codeYou don’t need years of industry experience. You need strong fundamentals, a track record of building real things, and an AI-native way of working: you already use AI coding tools as a core part of how you design, build, test, and debug, and you have the judgment to know when their output is right and when it isn’tEvidence that you build real software: internships, substantial class or team projects, open-source contributions, hackathons, or side projects that other people use0 to 2 years of professional software engineering experienceBachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experienceAbility to learn unfamiliar systems quickly through independent research and by working with mentors and subject-matter expertsExperience building with LLMs or agentic workflows (e.g., using the Claude or OpenAI APIs, MCP, or agent frameworks) in projects or courseworkClear written and verbal communication. You can explain what you built, why, and what tradeoffs you madeAI-native development workflow: daily, hands-on use of AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) to build and ship software, paired with the ability to critically evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability, and to explain every line you submitFluency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Java, TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Go, Kotlin, C#, Ruby)Excellent coding skills and strong computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, complexity, and debuggingUnderstanding of how web applications work, including HTTP, REST APIs, and relational databases/SQLWe're not looking for someone who checks every box. If you write great code, learn fast, and are excited about building the tools that let developers integrate trusted identity, we want to hear from you, even if your background doesn’t match this description exactlyExperience writing automated tests (unit, integration, or end-to-end with tools like Jest, JUnit, or Playwright)Experience with PostgreSQL or another relational database, including schema designExperience building developer tools, APIs, SDKs, or documentation that other developers useExperience with React, TypeScript, or Next.jsExposure to authentication and authorization concepts such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWTs, SSO, or access control modelsExperience with Java and Spring Boot, or another backend framework (Rails, Node.js/Express, Django, Go)Interest in security, identity, fraud prevention, or regulated systemsFamiliarity with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure), containers, or CI/CD pipelinesInternship experience building backend services or full-stack web applications
