A leading university seeks an experienced Software Engineer to join the innovative Wisconsin Health Data Hub for advancing patient outcomes through data science. This role involves full-stack application development and offers full remote capabilities as well as the option for onsite work in Madison, Wisconsin.
The UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) is a leader in research and innovation, dedicated to improving patient outcomes through advanced data science and analytics. We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer to contribute to our new Wisconsin Health Data Hub (WHDH) recently funded by the EDA as part of the TechHub (https://news.wisc.edu/federal-funds-awarded-for-biohealth-with-uw-madison-leading-the-way/) initiative and drive transformative data science projects to enhance healthcare and research at SMPH.
Under the direction of the WHDH Program Manager at SMPH, the Software Engineer will design, develop, test, deploy, and maintains scalable full-stack software applications and tools in support of WHDH program goals. This position spans front-end and back-end systems, with responsibilities ranging from ontological design of biomedical data, UI development and user experience optimization to database design and server-side logic. Provides guidance, mentorship, and technical leadership to other team members and actively contributes to software architecture and strategic planning.
This position can be performed fully remote and it is an expectation the finalist will have permanent residence within the State of Wisconsin. There are opportunities to work at an onsite location in Madison, Wisconsin if desired. Successful applicants who do not currently live in Wisconsin must have plans to move to the state within a reasonable time from the position start date.

Preferred

Preferred degree in computer science, engineering or related field
Required:
- Experience in client-side web development
- Experience in full-stack web development
- Experience in cloud computing infrastructure and assembly
- Demonstrated capacity to learn and master new technologies and technical methodologies
- High level of organization and capacity to manage multiple competing priorities with excellence
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including documentation best practices
- Excellent interpersonal and team collaboration skills
Preferred:
- Experience with Symfony PHP framework
- Experience with React / React Native
- Experience in database design and data modelling. The ideal candidate will be familiar with Postgres and MySQL/MariaDB
- High level of comfort with Linux command-line
- Knowledge of CI/CD methodology and tools as well as QA analysis
- Experience with Python or other scripting languages
- Experience handling dependency management & evaluation of technical framework or tools
- Experience in integrating systems - Understanding of and comfort with building and consuming microservices and APIs generally
- Prior experience working with ontological structured design/representations and standards of biomedical data is highly desired

It is anticipated this position will be remote and requires work be performed at an offsite, non-campus work location. The finalist must maintain residence within the State of Wisconsin. Successful applicants who do not currently live in Wisconsin must have plans to move to the state within a reasonable time from the position start date.
A work space will be provided in Madison, Wisconsin should someone want to work partially onsite.

The starting salary for the position is $75,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
