Job summary

Joyent, a Samsung subsidiary, seeks a Software Engineer (Developer Experience) to advance our cloud platform. You’ll work heavily with Terraform and Kubernetes, focusing on Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD, and database work including MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and TiDB in HA setups.

You’ll engage across time zones with DevOps, architects and business stakeholders, optimize queries and data protection, and help expand tooling beyond cloud-only solutions in a Linux-based environment.

Qualifications

• Experience running MariaDB HA workloads.
• Experience with running PostgreSQL in HA settings.
• Ability to recover from replication failures.
• Understanding of CI/CD pipeline concepts.
• Developer experience with Go and Python.
• Some experience with Terraform, Kubernetes, and IaC methodologies.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to HA Open Source Database solutions utilizing MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and TiDB.
• Revisit current architecture and make recommendations for improvements or gaps in the designs.
• Protect data in all environments and ensure proper backups.
• Help optimize slow queries and improve DB performance.
• Be open to expanding to Redis or FoundationDB.
• Work on Infrastructure as Code principles to automate activities.
• Handle on-call responsibilities.
• Collaborate with time zones and cross-functional teams (DevOps, architects, stakeholders).
• Avoid relying solely on cloud-based DB solutions.
• Operate in Linux environments (CentOS/RHEL and Ubuntu).
• Familiar with configuration management tools (Ansible preferred).
• Communicate effectively with team members across time zones.
• Analyze data and metrics to optimize cloud resources.

Job Summary

Our team is experiencing great growth and we are in need of adding a Software Engineer (Developer Experience) to help with the new initiatives. This position is heavily utilizing Terraform and Kubernetes, you will be focused on working with newer technologies and solving problems related to Infrastructure-as-Code, CI, and CD. This position will be more Database focused. You will participate in Samsung’s cloud initiatives to utilize Kubernetes.

Job Responsibilities

Contribute to HA Open Source Database solutions utilizing mariadb, postgres, and tidb.

Revisit current architecture and make recommendations for any improvements or gaps in the designs.

Must understand importance of protecting data and ensure even for non production environments to make sure the data is properly backed up and protected

Help with any slow queries or other optimizations that can increase the performance of our databases.

Be open to expanding into other areas such as redis or foundationdb

Willingness to work with team to work on Infrastructure as code principles to automate all activities

Must be willing to handle oncall responsibilities

Still work with the team to try to find solutions that we can best support based on our existing infrastructure as code technologies

Can not rely strictly on cloud based DB solutions

Be comfortable in a Linux Based environment (rocky/centos/rhel and ubuntu)

Familiar with configuration management tools (ansible preferred)

Able to communicate effectively with members of the team in different time zones

Ability to analyze complex problems and come up with effective solutions in a cloud context.

Able to communicate effectively with members of the team in different time zones and cross-functionals teams including DevOps, architects, and business stakeholders.

Basic project management skills to manage tasks, timelines, and priorities effectively.

Education & Experience

Experience running mariadb HA workloads

Experience with running postgres in HA setting

Experience with being able to recover from issues such as replication failures

Understanding of cicd pipeline concepts

Developer experience with golang and python or similar programming languages

Some experience with Terraform, Kubernetes, and Infrastructure as Code methodologies.

Compensation for this position will vary among specific regions due to geographical differentials in the labor market, and actual pay will be determined considering factors such as relevant skills, experience, and comparison to other employees in the role. Therefore, the annual base compensation range for this role (depending on the geographical location) is expected to be between $114000 and $180000.
