Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • Proven understanding of modern software engineering practices and secure coding.
  • Experience with lifecycle tools and version control is expected.
  • Experience with C#, C++, or Java and OO design.
  • Experience in team-based projects and reading/modifying existing code.
  • Familiarity with web development: HTML/CSS/JS and a web framework.
  • Strong documentation and unit testing emphasis in projects.
  • Able to communicate technical work effectively to peers and stakeholders.

Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) Software Architecture and Technology (SWAT) team is responsible for the development and lifecycle support of multiple fleet and student pipeline simulation software products vital to the state‑of‑the‑art, high‑fidelity simulators for the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP). The position will provide an opportunity for the successful candidate to research, design, and test software supporting the simulator instructor station software and other infrastructure software and tools vital to the simulation training products. The candidate will work in a technically diverse environment with a team to support the NNPP simulators.

Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science; or
  • Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
Preferred Skills
  • Able to apply modern software engineering practices (e.g., agile development, code reviews, issue tracking).
  • Understanding of secure coding concepts and willingness to learn and apply secure software development practices.
  • Exposure to tools supporting the software development lifecycle, such as:
    • Requirements or issue tracking tools (e.g., Azure DevOps, Jira)
    • Build/CI tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps)
    • Version control systems (e.g., Git)
  • Academic or project experience programming in C#, C++, and/or Java, including object‑oriented design.
  • Experience working on team‑based software projects (course projects, labs, internships), including reading and modifying existing code.
  • Familiarity from coursework or projects with some of the following:
    • Full‑stack or multi‑layered application development (UI, application logic, and data)
    • Inter‑process communication or client‑server applications
    • Relational databases and basic SQL
  • Demonstrated attention to software quality through documentation and unit testing in class projects or internships.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, demonstrated through technical coursework, projects, or research.
  • Coursework or project experience with web application development, using technologies such as HTML/CSS, JavaScript, and a web framework (e.g., ASP.NET, React, Angular, or similar).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical work to peers and project stakeholders.
  • Interest in real‑time or high‑fidelity simulation systems, or in learning complex technical domains.

Pay Range

$63,900.00 - $97,800.00 annually

Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense‑owned Nuclear Power Training Unit‑Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world‑class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
