Overview

Software Engineer, Android Core Product - Pomona, USA. Speechify’s mission is to ensure reading is not a barrier to learning. Our text-to-speech products help users turn PDFs, books, Google Docs, news articles, and websites into audio, enabling faster reading, more reading, and better retention. We offer an iOS app, Android app, Mac app, Chrome Extension, and Web App. Speechify is distributed (no office) with a diverse team spanning global locations.

This role is ideal for someone who thinks strategically, thrives in fast-paced environments, enjoys making product decisions, and has experience building compelling user experiences in Android.

What You’ll Do
  • Own major features and collaborate with design to deliver high-quality Android features.
  • Shape the future of our Android team and contribute to product decisions.
  • Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features.
  • Participate in cross-team discussions (Product, Design, Engineering).
  • Review pull requests and support team members.
  • Handle critical issues and adapt to unexpected challenges.
  • Take ownership of feature releases and provide nightly builds for QA.
An Ideal Candidate Should Have
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Familiarity with Android components and experience building or contributing to at least one Android app.
  • Product design intuition and user empathy; ability to push Android UI/UX boundaries.
  • Understanding of testing and approaches to writing tests.
  • Self-driven to improve the app and codebase beyond the stated spec.
  • Strong Kotlin expertise (Kotlin, Coroutines, Flow), Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Android Animations, Jetpack Navigation, JUnit.
  • User-centered problem solving and openness to continuous feedback from leaders.
Bonus
  • Open source Android contributions or maintenance experience.
  • Experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS.

Salary: United States-based range for this role is 140,000-200,000 USD per year plus bonus and stock, depending on experience.
