Software Engineer – Software/Cyber Directorate
MERC, a research institute of Mercer University, seeks a Software Engineer to develop and maintain web‑based and embedded software solutions, contributing to multiple projects under the direction of a Technical Lead.
Responsibilities
- Full stack software development.
- Develop embedded, engineering/scientific, web, machine learning and AI‑based software solutions.
- Collaborate with colleagues and senior developers on technical designs and development.
- Document software design using flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, self‑documenting code, inline comments, and other appropriate documentation.
- Develop software solutions by studying user requirements, data usage, and system flow.
- Provide project status to internal and external customers.
- Analyze source code and recommend software quality and performance improvements.
- Manage the software development life‑cycle.
- Decompose typical, non‑complex software requirements into actionable steps.
- Manage role‑based access control and access control lists for systems and devices.
- Prepare reports on programming project specifications, activities, or status.
- Direct system testing and validation procedures.
- Direct software programming and documentation development.
- Collaborate with colleagues, customers, and other companies on software and cybersecurity projects.
- Comply with all Executive Director approved MERC‑wide policies and procedures.
- Adhere to approved MERC MSP quality management policies and principles, promoting continuous quality improvement.
- Ensure familiarity with MERC core capabilities and identify opportunities to promote MERC to customers.
- Submit suggestions for new business opportunities or report identified customer problems to the Director of Acquisition Strategy via the Chief Engineer.
Required Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance.
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science from an ABET‑accredited institution.
- Possession or ability to obtain Security+ CE Certification.
- Experience with Python, Java, JavaScript, jQuery, C#, and Microsoft.NET frameworks including MVC, Web Forms and/or .NET Core.
- Experience in secure coding practices.
- Experience in database design principles and SQL.
- Experience with the agile framework and the software development life cycle.
- Experience developing testing strategies for components and applications.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience with Oracle/SQL Server.
- Knowledge of Docker and/or Kubernetes.
- Experience with AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
- Excellent communication skills to work with cross‑functional teams.
- Strong passion for software development.
- Familiarity with Azure DevOps.
- Proficiency with MS Office, MS Teams, and Adobe Suite.
