Job summary

enGen is seeking a versatile Software Engineer to bridge Mainframe and Open Systems within an Agile team. You will own end-to-end development of scalable applications, migrating workloads and implementing AI/automation strategies to optimize delivery and quality.

The role requires hands-on experience across legacy mainframe and modern Open Systems, plus strong collaboration in Scrum and with Jira. A Bachelor's or Master’s degree in CS/CE and 3+ years in related tech is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; strong background in algorithms and data structures.
  • 3+ years design/analysis of scalable, highly available systems.
  • Experience in at least two of the following: React, Angular, NodeJS, NoSQL, HTML5/CSS; familiarity with AWS or GCP.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages including Java, Python, JavaScript, C/C++, C#, Go.
  • Ability to design system architectures and evaluate technical feasibility for short- and long-term goals.

Job Summary

CANDIDATE MUST BE US CITIZEN (due to contractual/access requirements) CRITICAL REQUIREMENT: This is a true dual-domain role. Candidates MUST possess hands‑on, professional experience in BOTH legacy Mainframe environments AND modern Open Systems. We are seeking a highly skilled and versatile Software Engineer to join our Agile team. This role involves the end‑to‑end development of complex, scalable software applications, requiring simultaneous expertise across both legacy Mainframe environments and modern Open Systems. Experience migrating workloads from legacy platforms to open architectures is strongly preferred.

Core Responsibilities
  • Full‑Stack Development: Designing, developing, and implementing solutions that seamlessly bridge Mainframe and open system architectures.
  • AI & Automation: Championing and implementing AI/automation strategies throughout the SDLC to enhance efficiency, accelerate delivery, and optimize processes.
  • Quality & Best Practices: Writing high‑quality, maintainable code, conducting thorough code reviews, and adhering to coding standards across both technical environments.
  • Agile Collaboration: Full participation in Scrum ceremonies, defining/refining user stories, and maintaining accurate task status in Agile project management software.
  • Mentorship: Guiding Associate Software Engineers across Mainframe, AI, open systems, and automation best practices.
Technical Acumen Required
  • Mainframe & Open Systems Programming: Proven, concurrent experience in both legacy and modern programming paradigms.
  • Database Management: SQL, relational/non‑relational databases, and data modeling across diverse platforms.
  • DevOps & CI/CD: Pipelines, version control, automated testing, and monitoring tools.
  • AI/ML Concepts: Principles, frameworks, and data preparation.
  • Agile Methodologies: Scrum, Jira.
  • Problem‑Solving & Soft Skills: Analytical abilities, designing scalable architectures, excellent communication, teamwork, mentorship, adaptability, and a proactive approach.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The job is responsible for designing and creating engineering specifications for software applications and programs.
  • Responsible for designing & writing code that adheres to coding standards.
  • Perform code reviews.
  • Responsible for idea generation, exploring and implementing appropriate technical solutions to achieve the required product features, as well as monitoring technical process against project plan while safeguarding functionality, scalability and performance.
  • A part of an agile work team and responsible for participating in all scrum ceremonies, assisting in sprint planning and completing required sprints in the development through final execution of software applications/programs.
  • Communicate any issues/blockers to the Scrum Master in a timely manner.
  • Drive story creation (i.e. DoD, Acceptance Criteria, estimation).
  • Creates Tasks for their stories in applicable software (ex: RTC or Jira), and updates status and assignment accordingly.
  • Monitor work against production schedule and provide progress updates and report any issues or technical difficulties to lead developers on a regular basis.
  • Mentor other associate software engineers as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned or requested.
Education

Required: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Closely Related Field.

Preferred: Master's Degree in in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Related Field.

Experience
  • Required 3 years of Proficiency in design and analysis of algorithms, data structures, and design patterns in the building and deploying of scalable; highly available systems.
  • To Include 3 years of Experience in at least one modern programming languages (Java, Python, JavaScript, ACE, IIB/ITX, Informatica preferred), and experience with at least two of the following: React, Angular v4+, NodeJS, NoSQL databases, HTML5, CSS, Google Cloud Platform or Amazon Web Services.
  • 3 years of Understanding of web services technologies such as REST, HTTPS, JSON.
  • Preferred 5 years of Experience with one or more general purpose programming languages including but not limited to: Java, Python (Django/Flask), C/C++, C#, Objective C, JavaScript, or Go.
  • To Include 5 years of Experience defining system architectures and exploring technical feasibility trade‑offs for optimizing short term execution while planning for long term technical capabilities.
  • 5 years of Experience working with a variety of technology systems, designing solutions or developing applications in healthcare.
  • 5 years of Experience translating design mockups, prototypes and user stories into working applications.
  • 5 years of Ability to produce code that is fault‑tolerant, efficient, and maintainable.

  • Demonstrated ability to achieve stretch goals in a highly innovative and fast paced environment.
  • Have experience working with agile methodology of scrum.
  • Interest and ability to learn other programming languages as needed.
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, unit testing, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
  • Strong track record in designing and implementing large scale consumer facing applications.
  • Strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive.
  • Demonstrated passion for user experience and improving usability.
  • Experience and willingness to mentor junior engineers and help develop their skills and leadership.
Preferred Skills
  • Certifications & Methodologies: Agile Methodology Certification (e.g., CSM, CSPO).
  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with open systems technologies.
  • Industry & Technology Trends: Awareness of emerging healthcare IT regulations and trends.
  • Exposure to claims processing software or platforms (e.g., Facets, Amisys, HealthRules).
