Job summary

Finer Recruiting, LLC is seeking a Software Engineer in New York to join a growing technology function. The role involves ownership of software delivery across internal applications, APIs, data workflows, and applied AI tooling, reporting to the Head of AI and collaborating with a DevOps Engineer.

You will design and deploy Python-based backend services, build dashboards with React/TypeScript, and contribute to architecture decisions while advancing research and portfolio-related data workflows

Qualifications

• 3-7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Advanced Python proficiency and strong understanding of object-oriented design, data structures, debugging, testing, and maintainable software design.
• Experience building production backend services and REST APIs with FastAPI, Flask, Django, or similar frameworks.
• Strong SQL and relational database skills; PostgreSQL experience preferred.
• Experience with data modeling, APIs, system integrations, and/or ETL/data pipelines.
• Working knowledge of AWS or another major cloud platform, Git, automated testing, Docker, and CI/CD concepts.
• Ability to independently take ambiguous requirements from discovery through production delivery.
• Strong communication skills and comfort partnering directly with investment professionals and senior stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Partner directly with the Head of AI, investment professionals, and operational stakeholders to identify high-value workflows and translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Design, build, test, deploy, and support Python-based applications, backend services, and internal APIs.
• Build software supporting research, transaction analysis, portfolio and risk workflows, data access, document processing, and operational automation.
• Design and maintain relational databases, data models, ETL/ingestion pipelines, scheduled workflows, and integrations with external data and software providers.
• Develop applied AI capabilities including LLM integrations, retrieval-augmented generation, tool use, agentic workflows, document extraction, and evaluation/monitoring patterns where appropriate.
• Build internal web interfaces and dashboards using React/TypeScript or comparable technologies when user-facing applications are required.
• Write clean, modular, maintainable code with appropriate testing, documentation, code review, and version-control practices.
• Work with the DevOps Engineer on AWS architecture, containerization, CI/CD, deployment, observability, security, and production support.
• Own solutions through the full lifecycle and iterate rapidly based on feedback from investment and business users.
• Contribute to architecture decisions, engineering standards, reusable libraries, and the long-term technical roadmap of the firm.

Role Overview

The Software Engineer will be a foundational engineering hire within a newly expanding technology function. The role works directly with the Head of AI, whose background combines investment technology, AI product development, data infrastructure, risk/portfolio tooling, and technology operations, as well as prior AWS data-platform experience at a hedge fund. The engineer will own software delivery across internal applications, APIs, data workflows, integrations, and applied AI use.

• Hands-on experience building AI/LLM applications using model APIs, RAG/retrieval, agents, tool use/MCP, structured outputs, or evaluation systems.
• Experience in a hedge fund, asset manager, fintech, trading firm, financial-data provider, or another data-intensive environment.
• Familiarity with financial data, investment research workflows, structured products, portfolio/risk data, or document-heavy analytical processes.
• Experience with Pandas/Polars, workflow orchestration, asynchronous/background jobs, search/vector databases, or analytics/data platforms.
• Experience in a small engineering team where engineers own projects end-to-end.
