Job summary

Joyful Health seeks a talented backend engineer to join our NYC-based team. With 5+ years in building distributed data pipelines, you’ll shape our AI-powered data integration platform for healthcare practices and help recover revenue through interoperability.

You’ll own architecture and implementation of scalable pipelines, collaborate with product and engineering, and contribute to our technical roadmap in a fast-paced startup environment. This is a full-time on-site role in NYC.

Qualifications

Building the financial operating system for healthcare, and bringing the joy back to healthcare by fixing the financial chaos behind it.

The healthcare payment system is a complex and inefficient maze - healthcare practices leave $125 billion in revenue uncollected each year, lost in the chaos of fragmented financial data, manual workflows, and opaque payer systems. This financial uncertainty leaves practices struggling to stay afloat, while valuable revenue slips through the cracks.

Joyful Health is building the AI-powered financial operating system for healthcare practices. Our mission is to bring the joy back to running a private practice by simplifying financial operations so providers can focus on patient care. We spent 10 months working as fractional CFOs for a dozen practices, doing this work side by side with providers as we developed our product.

We just announced our $22M Series A led by CRV and world-class investors including the founders of MongoDB & KAYAK.

We have an enormous opportunity in front of us. The broken healthcare payment ecosystem impacts practices of all sizes, and the opportunity to make a real difference is massive.

This role is full-time. We’re looking for someone NYC-based who is open to coming into the office 3 days a week.

The base pay range for this role is $150,000–$275,000 per year.

Role Description

We’re looking for a talented and ambitious backend engineer with 5+ years of experience in developing distributed pipelines who’s excited to solve one of the toughest challenges in healthcare—financial data interoperability. You’ll play a key role in shaping our data integration strategy and enabling us to onboard customers at scale.

Integrating the financial data of small healthcare practices—each with its own unique systems—has long been a roadblock in the industry. This has meant that very few solutions have emerged in the market that are actually able to solve the unique challenges of small medical practices (and even larger ones). We’ve begun to crack this challenge, and the work that we’ve done so far has enabled us to seamlessly onboard new data sources in days, not months. This entirely opens up a massive untapped market.

As a software engineer, you’ll have an outsized impact on the company’s trajectory, working on a critical problem that’s central to our success. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to work on something extremely challenging and make a huge difference. You should be comfortable (and excited!) about working in a fast-paced, early-stage startup environment where you'll be able to wear many hats and take on new challenges as they arise.

This role is full-time. We’re looking for candidates based in NYC.

What you’ll do

• Drive the architecture, design, and implementation of complex pipelines for AI agents and data ingestion sources

• Develop and scale our data integration infrastructure to connect seamlessly with a variety of healthcare systems.

• Solve interoperability challenges to help healthcare practices recover lost revenue and understand their financial health.

• Work closely with the engineering and product teams to improve onboarding speed and build a robust data strategy.

• Actively contribute to building the team’s architectural vision and technical roadmap

• Collaborate on code reviews and technical design documents to ensure code quality and distribute knowledge

  • You have 5+ years of experience in backend engineering, with a focus on building data pipelines and integrations.

    • Experience working with healthcare data or solving interoperability challenges is a plus.

  • Proficiency in:

    • Python and database systems, with familiarity in performance and optimization for scale

    • Experience in distributed systems coordination and AI pipelines

    • Familiarity with big data technologies and comfortable working with massive datasets

    • CI/CD workflows such as Github actions
