Qualifications

• 5+ years of software development for space systems and ground segments (C2, mission planning, data processing).
• 5+ years of development experience using Python.
• 3+ years of experience with JavaScript (Angular, JQuery).
• 3+ years of experience with TypeScript.

Job description

Zachary Piper Solutions is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead the design, development, testing, and sustainment of non‑embedded software supporting space systems, ground segments, command & control, mission planning, and real‑time data processing environments. This role drives end‑to‑end software lifecycle execution, ensuring products meet industry, customer, safety, and regulatory standards.

You will architect high‑performance APIs, develop intuitive user interfaces, optimize backend services, and guide teams through modern DevSecOps practices. This position requires strong leadership, technical depth, and the ability to operate effectively in complex, ambiguous environments.

Core Responsibilities

• API architecture leadership — Lead development of requirements, architecture, algorithms, interfaces, and designs for high‑performance APIs connecting front‑end and back‑end services.
• Agile DevSecOps execution — Guide software development activities in Agile environments, integrating completed components into fully functional systems.
• Full lifecycle ownership — Lead critical feature development from design through deployment.
• Backend ecosystem development — Build, architect, and consume APIs and backend services with emphasis on automation, testing, and security.
• Code quality leadership — Conduct and lead code reviews to enforce standards and maintain quality.
• Front‑end development — Translate design mockups into functional, visually appealing UIs using modern frameworks.
• Product quality advocacy — Champion improvements to product quality, security, and performance.
• Team leadership — Mentor engineers, self‑direct work, and operate effectively in ambiguous environments.
• Software lifecycle execution — Design, develop, test, maintain, and optimize software products across the full lifecycle.
• Requirements translation — Review, analyze, and translate customer requirements into initial software designs.
• Troubleshooting & reliability — Debug and resolve issues to ensure reliability and efficiency.
• User support — Handle user inquiries, troubleshoot issues, and analyze feedback.
• Emerging tech implementation — Implement new technologies, frameworks, and regulatory changes.
• Process improvement — Develop and improve software processes, tools, and KPIs aligned with organizational goals.
• R&D execution — Execute and document software research and development projects.
• Domain advising — Advise on software domains, system‑specific issues, processes, and regulations.
• Supplier management — Perform software project management and supplier oversight.
• Performance tracking — Track and evaluate team and supplier performance for compliance and standards.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher
• 5+ years of software development for space systems and ground segments (C2, mission planning, data processing)
• 5+ years of development experience using Python
• 3+ years of experience with JavaScript (Angular, JQuery)
• 3+ years of experience with TypeScript

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
• 5+ years of progressive leadership experience on government programs
• 5+ years designing intuitive UIs with real‑time 2D/3D geospatial visualization
• 5+ years across the full SDLC (requirements, design, coding, integration, test)
• 5+ years with database technologies (Postgres, SQL/NoSQL)
• 3+ years with Java and FastAPI
• Deep knowledge of C2 systems, mission planning, ground systems, real‑time applications
• Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, builds, and deployment workflows

Salary and Benefits Include:

Salary Range: $170,000-$210,000+ **depending on experience**
