Job description

Job Title: Software Engineer

Work Location: Asheville, NC; Silver Spring, MD; Stennis, MS; Boulder, CO; Remote

Clearance Required: Public Trust

Alpha Omega is seeking a Software Engineer to join the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Data Stewardship Division (DSD). This division collaborates with NOAA and the community to develop infrastructure supporting the ingestion, preservation, and delivery of environmental data from oceans to the sun.

As a Software Engineer, you will contribute to bringing environmental data into NOAA's cloud archive, working with an Agile team to develop Python code that links descriptive information to scientific data files, integrates data into the NOAA archive hosted on AWS, and makes descriptive data accessible via discovery portals and AI tools. Collaboration with subject matter experts and analysis of data documentation will be key parts of your role. This position offers opportunities to enhance skills in AWS, scientific data, and machine learning, supporting global scientific research.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Support the stewardship of the nation's environmental data archive.
  2. Collaborate with experts to extract requirements and develop, test, and debug Python code in AWS Cloud9.
  3. Create patterns and templates in Amazon SageMaker AI.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of programming experience, or an associate degree with 6+ years, or 8+ years of experience.
  • Strong Python programming skills.
  • Logical, analytical thinking and strategic problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work remotely in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Atlassian Jira, AWS, Cloud9, Amazon Neptune, relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL), and scientific data formats like NetCDF.
  • Knowledge of Agile/SAFe Scrum methodologies.
  • Possession of AWS Certification is desirable.

Salary Range: $97,640 - $117,000 (final salary depends on experience, skills, and certifications).
