Job summary

Backblaze is seeking a Software Development Manager to lead the Computer Backup desktop client (Windows/macOS) and its back-end services. You will steer long-term technical direction, multi-quarter delivery, and budget accountability, while hands-on in architecture discussions, code reviews, and decisions across desktop and backend.

The role requires 5+ years in engineering management, strong agile experience, and a track record of remote team leadership.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of engineering management experience leading software teams.
• Deep experience with agile development processes (scrum, planning, backlog, estimation, retrospectives).
• Experience managing distributed, remote engineering teams with async comms.
• Strong software engineering background with system architecture expertise.
• Full software development lifecycle from requirements to production support.
• Commitment to engineering quality and automated test coverage.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow the Backblaze Computer Backup desktop client and backend services.
• Ensure alignment and agile delivery across desktop and backend.
• Oversee agile ceremonies across both areas (planning, standups, retrospectives).
• Own delivery from design to post-launch, coordinating with QA and release teams.
• Ensure reliability, performance and maintainability of client and services.
• Promote unit testing and automated tests as baseline practice.
• Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions and problem solving.
• Collaborate with Product Management to shape roadmap and translate into plans.
• Coordinate with QA and release teams for clean handoffs and criteria.
• Champion AI-assisted development tools and integrate them into workflows.
• Improve team productivity by removing bottlenecks and investing in tooling.
• Conduct 1:1s, performance reviews, and hiring to grow the team.
• Communicate team work clearly to leadership and stakeholders.
