Job description

Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

This role supports our Systems Test team at Joby and focuses on Software Development for several test assets. This role will have exposure to a highly-skilled and knowledgeable team of go-getters including hardware engineers, software engineers, technicians and subject matter experts across the company. We are looking for a Software Development Engineer with experience with National Instruments (NI) Software (LabVIEW, Veristand) and hardware (PXI, cRIO, etc.), Python scripting and test automation. The position will support several test sites in Santa Cruz, Marina and San Carlos. The primary responsibilities for this role will include developing and maintaining test software, scripts and infrastructure in LabVIEW, Veristand and Python. You will work with various engineering teams at Joby Aviation (including design, systems, software, simulation, certification, and more). The Software Development Engineer will develop and execute appropriate strategies that allow the company and team to achieve milestones on schedule and meet quality and financial requirements. This role will operate in a fast-paced, demanding, and rewarding environment with very high expectations for individual contribution. This position demands the ability to multi-task, prioritize tasks based on requirements and track/manage many different (yet similar) integration efforts at once.

Responsibilities
  • Develop test software infrastructure and tools to make the test process more efficient.
  • Develop instrumentation and controls hardware, test fixture GUI, LabVIEW VIs and any other necessary tools to enable test execution and automation.
  • Work closely with Testing, Design, Software, Systems, Simulation and Certification, as well as with other supporting functions and IPTs to identify and scope out software requirements for the different test assets.
  • Execute tests with the team for integration of hardware, software and specialized test equipment necessary to conduct verification of mission profiles, emergency response, safety of flight clearance and requirements.
  • Create and maintain configuration control of the software under test and test equipment hardware & software, as well as calibration records.
  • Analyze test data and generate reports to provide quantifiable feedback to the engineering teams and optimize designs.
Required
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in test engineering.
  • Expertise in developing Hardware In the Loop (HIL), simulation-based testing and/or integration tests of Hardware/Software.
  • Fluent in developing LabVIEW VIs for data collection, automation, control, and real-time.
  • Fluent in using Veristand Software.
  • Proficient with Linux environments (e.g., Ubuntu) and scripting (Python) for test support, automation or data processing.
  • Experience with Instrumentation, Data Acquisition Systems and Sensors.
  • Experience with LabVIEW workflows, releases, git and SW team management.
Desired
  • Knowledgeable about network architecture.
  • Experience with high voltage systems and electronics.
  • Experience with test laboratory environments and procedures.
  • Experience with LabVIEW Runtime, Realtime, and FPGA.
  • Experience with aircraft certification (ARP 4754, DO-178), regulatory requirements, compliance testing, aircraft software engineering processes, and test verification.
