We are seeking a Software Development Engineer to join our Data Platform and Observability Engineering team, where you will design and scale core features of Workday’s distributed tracing platform. You will work with technologies such as ClickHouse, Grafana Tempo, Kafka, Spark/Flink, Iceberg, and S3 on AWS, developing high-performance systems capable of handling large-scale data. Responsibilities include building robust ingestion and query execution systems, maintaining high-throughput pipelines, optimizing performance, ensuring reliability through error handling and failover mechanisms, securing multi-tenant data access, and supporting the operational health of the platform. You will also contribute to AI-driven observability solutions and collaborate with senior engineers to deepen your expertise in distributed systems.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years of software development experience, including 3+ years designing and operating complex distributed systems with successful deployment of high-availability solutions. Proficiency in Java, Python, or Go is required, along with hands‑on experience in distributed systems. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is necessary, with a master’s degree strongly preferred. Additional qualifications include strong algorithmic skills, experience with API development (gRPC, REST, OTLP), distributed load testing, and familiarity with Kafka, Spark, Flink, and ClickHouse. Knowledge of system security, object-oriented design, and technical documentation is also required.

The role offers a competitive salary range of $148,000–$222,000 annually for the primary location in Pleasanton, CA, with flexible work arrangements combining in‑office and remote options.
