We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our Data Platform and Observability Engineering (DPOE) team, where you will design and execute core components of Workday’s distributed tracing platform, leveraging ClickHouse and Grafana Tempo, supported by a big-data pipeline including Kafka, Spark/Flink, Iceberg, and S3. This role involves tackling multi-petabyte scale challenges, optimizing low-latency infrastructure, and contributing to the technical foundation for Observability AI. You will drive engineering excellence, mentor developers, and act as a domain expert in tracing ingestion, storage, and query performance.
The ideal candidate has 8+ years of software development experience, with 4+ years focused on designing and operating complex distributed systems, including high availability and fault tolerance. Proficiency in at least two of Java, Go, Scala, or Python is required, along with a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and a Master’s strongly preferred. Additional qualifications include strong algorithmic thinking, API development experience with gRPC, REST, and OpenTelemetry, and hands‑on expertise with distributed systems tools like Kafka, Spark, Flink, and ClickHouse. Experience with large‑scale data processing, system security, and technical documentation is also essential.
This role offers a competitive annual base salary range of $190,100–$285,100 USD for the primary location in Pleasanton, CA, with flexible work arrangements that require at least 50% in‑office time quarterly.
