Job summary

AMEWAS is seeking a Software Developer (DAPS)‑Journeyman to support the Data Acquisition and Processing System for EMP, RF testing, and related DoD work. The role requires on-site presence at Patuxent River, MD and a DoD Secret clearance path, with a salary range of $105,200.00 to $175,000.00 commensurate with experience.

The candidate will implement new GUI interfaces, collaborate with a cross‑functional team, and work through Agile sprints to deliver tested software alongside legacy interfaces

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Engineering with relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Designs a Windows application that will serve as the new DAPS software.
  • Utilizes an Agile implementation process and SCRUM.
  • Uses Agile methods to employ fixed length Sprints
  • Develops, designs, documents, and delivers a high‑level design of the overall system architecture for a new DAPS using Agile processes.
  • Attends daily internal discussions, development work discussions, Sprint Review meetings, and Sprint Retrospective.
  • Completes high‑level design element of the complete system at the end of each sprint.
  • Conducts a preliminary design review and systems requirements review of the high‑level design.
  • Creates the System Architecture documentation.
  • Works with a team to develop all other documentation for project.
  • Interfaces software with legacy DAPS SQL database and existing transceivers.
  • Implements a GUI to control software functions and communicates with Windows-based hardware.

The Position

AMEWAS is seeking a highly motivated and talented Software Developer (DAPS)-Journeyman to support Advanced Aircraft Research, Development, Test & Evaluation. The salary range of this position is $105,200.00 - $175,000.00 and is commensurate with experience. This position is not eligible for remote work; on‑site support is required.

Position Background

The Data Acquisition and Processing (DAPS) team is a government run team that supports data collection efforts during electromagnetic pulse (EMP), Lightning, and Radio Frequency (RF) susceptibility testing at Naval Air Station Patuxent River Maryland. As a Software Developer on the DAPS team will support the development, validation, installation and integration proof‑of‑concept acquisition software to interface with both new and legacy Data Acquisition and Processing System (DAPS) hardware commercial off the shelf (COTS) products and databases at the Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) facility.

A typical day as a Software Developer (DAPS)-Journeyman may include:
  • Designs a Windows application that will serve as the new DAPS software
  • Utilizes an Agile implementation process
  • Uses Agile methods (SCRUM or DoD agile standard) to employ fixed length Sprints encompassing requirements, design, development, testing, and deployment resulting in a finished and tested product at the end of each Sprint
  • Develops, designs, documents, and delivers a high‑level design of the overall system architecture for a new Data Acquisition and Processing System (DAPS) using Agile implementation processes
  • Attends daily internal discussions, development work discussions, Sprint Review meetings, and Sprint Retrospective
  • Completes high‑level design element of the complete system at the end of each sprint
  • Conducts a preliminary design review and systems requirements review of the high‑level design
  • Creates the System Architecture documentation
  • Works with a team to develop all other documentation for project
  • Acts as a supporting member of software developers creating DAPS software
  • Interfaces software that shall communicate/import the legacy DAPS Microsoft Access Structured Query Language (SQL) relational database
  • Interfaces software that shall interact/interface with the existing EG&G ODS-1500 and ODS-2200 Optical Data Link transceivers used at NAWCAD EMP facility
  • Interfaces for recording, playback, presentation, and post execution analysis
  • Incorporates a new graphic user interface (GUI) to control software functions
  • Communicates with Windows based systems (oscilloscopes, network analyzers, computers, etc.)
  • Uses Python, Django, VS Code (or other IDEs), Windows, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, GitLab, or MySQL (or other DBs)
Must-haves
  • Bachelor’s Degree in in Computer Science or Engineering: Degrees in Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics, Aerospace, Computer, Software Systems, Electrical, Electronics or Mechanical Engineering with at least 3 years of relevant experience may qualify
  • 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Proficiency with Python
  • Proficiency with DevOps and Continuous Integration
  • Experience with complex application architectures (separation of application roles and use/design APIs to control or retrieve data from other applications)
  • Experience designing GUIs (OS or web applications)
  • Experience analyzing existing and designing new database schemas
  • Knowledge of standard programming algorithms, design patterns, and object‑oriented software design
  • Experience analyzing legacy software as part of software modernization efforts
  • Experience using Agile development and DevOps methodologies
  • The ability to collaborate with customers, engineers, and technicians to design, develop, and deploy solutions
  • Minimum clearance required to apply (candidates who do not currently hold the required clearance will not be considered): N/A
  • Current clearance required upon onboarding: DoD Secret Clearance
  • Additional Accesses: The ability to obtain and maintain the DoD security clearance eligibility and/or additional security access requirements necessary to perform the duties of the position, as required by the contract
