Job description

The Role

General Motors is seeking a motivated Software Engineer to join the Battery Energy Transfer organization. This role develops embedded software for electrified vehicles, with a focus on power-electronics control and energy-transfer functions such as onboard charging, power conversion, charging and discharging, and vehicle-to-everything capabilities. You will design, implement, integrate, and validate production-quality software that enables safe, reliable, and efficient transfer of energy between the vehicle, battery, and charging infrastructure. The role combines hands-on embedded software development with system-level collaboration across software, controls, systems, validation, calibration, electrical architecture, and hardware teams.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop and maintain embedded C/C++ software for automotive power-electronics and energy-transfer applications.

  • Design software for AC/DC charging, DC/DC conversion, voltage and current regulation, power-flow control, state machines, diagnostics, protection, and fault handling.

  • Translate system and controls requirements into clear, maintainable, and testable software designs and implementation.

  • Collaborate with software architects, system engineers, SSLEs, hardware and HWIO teams, calibration, validation, and suppliers to resolve technical issues and deliver integrated solutions.

  • Support software architecture, interface definition, feature decomposition, and requirements traceability from system behavior through implementation and test.

  • Develop and review software using sound design principles, coding standards, and automotive embedded best practices, including MISRA-aligned development where applicable.

  • Use CAN and other vehicle communication technologies to support controller interfaces, diagnostics, and feature integration.

  • Perform unit, integration, hardware-in-the-loop, system, and vehicle-level testing; investigate failures and drive root-cause resolution.

  • Support automated build, test, and continuous-integration workflows to improve software quality and delivery efficiency.

  • Use behavior- and test-driven development practices, including clear acceptance criteria and Given/When/Then scenarios where appropriate.

  • Participate in design reviews, code reviews, technical problem solving, and continuous improvement of development and validation processes.

  • Contribute to charging and energy-transfer features supporting EV charging infrastructure, charging protocols, and bidirectional energy-transfer use cases.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field.

  • 2+ years of professional experience in automotive embedded software development, power-electronics controls software, or a closely related field.

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience developing production-oriented software in C or C++.

  • Understanding of real-time embedded software design, software interfaces, state machines, diagnostics, and hardware/software integration.

  • Experience translating requirements into software design, implementation, and verification activities.

  • Experience with software debugging, integration, root-cause analysis, and automated or bench-based testing.

  • Ability to work effectively across software, systems, controls, hardware, validation, and other cross-functional engineering teams.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, analytical ability, and attention to detail.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering or computer science discipline.

  • 5+ years of professional experience in automotive embedded software development, power-electronics controls software, or a closely related field.

  • Experience with onboard chargers, OBCM systems, AC/DC converters, DC/DC converters, power-factor correction, voltage/current control, or related power-electronics applications.

  • Experience with automotive charging, discharging, EVSE interfaces, V2X, V2G, or charging protocols such as DIN/ISO, CCS, NACS, or CHAdeMO.

  • Knowledge of CAN, LIN, Ethernet, ARXML, UDS, or other automotive communication and diagnostic technologies.

  • Familiarity with requirements and traceability tools such as DNG or DOORS, and development tools such as Git, Jira, CANoe/CANalyzer, or equivalent platforms.

  • Experience with software architecture, MBSE concepts, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, or DevOps practices.

  • Experience with HIL, SIL, CoSim, bench, dyno, or vehicle-level validation.

  • Knowledge of functional safety, cybersecurity, ASPICE, MISRA, or other automotive software quality practices.

  • Experience with BDD or TDD methods and writing behavior-focused, testable requirements.

What will help you succeed

  • Strong interest in electrification, power conversion, and automotive embedded software.

  • Ability to move between detailed code-level problem solving and system-level technical discussions.

  • Ownership mindset, curiosity, and willingness to resolve issues through collaboration.

  • Commitment to building safe, maintainable, testable, and reusable software.

  • Ability to work in an agile environment and manage priorities across multiple stakeholders.
