Description

The Human Services Adult Behavioral Health area is seeking to hire a Senior Social Worker (SSW) to assist in the early identification and intervention for individuals with mental health, medical, and substance use needs who have contact with the City of Minneapolis Emergency Communications Center (MECC). This position will be embedded in MECC. This position will provide consultation, problem-solving, support and resources to 911 callers experiencing behavioral health emergencies and/or calls where a social work intervention may be appropriate.

Behavioral Health is an innovative and growing service area within Hennepin County’s Human Services department. We provide a range of mental health and substance use services to residents including populations intersecting children, adults, and criminal justice. We have 230+ staff including social workers, psychologists, program managers, supervisors, planners, and others working collaboratively to meet our system goals of expanded access, upstream help, and person-centered services.

Location and hours:

This onsite position is located at the City of Minneapolis Emergency Communication Center (MECC), 350 South 5th Street # B911, Minneapolis, MN 55415, in downtown Minneapolis. This position is phone-only, and the work schedule is Monday – Friday from 12 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

About This Position Type

This is a limited duration (temporary), full-time benefit earning position that may last up to two years.

In This Position You Will

  • Build collaborative relationships with 911 dispatchers and call takers by offering social service-related consults, attending and actively engaging in MECC meetings and presenting social service-related information to MECC partners.
  • Receive transfers from call takers to provide phone support to 911 callers until first responders arrive.
  • Provide in real time problem-solving and connection to resources to 911 callers.
  • Conduct needs assessment to determine the most appropriate immediate intervention.
  • Provide crisis intervention, counseling, and support to individuals and families.
  • Connect individuals and families to relevant resources which may include mental health services, substance use disorder services, and housing assistance.
  • Coordinate follow-up and connection to on-going supports as needed.
  • Document referrals received and case notes utilizing state and county systems.

Need To Have

  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, or human services, and 18 semester (27 quarter) credits of graduate work in the above areas, and three years or more of full-time supervised experience as a social worker.
    • Master's degree or higher in social work or closely related field with course work emphasis in areas such as social work methods, human growth and behavior, and principles of social welfare.
    • Licensed as a Graduate Social Worker by the Minnesota Board of Social Work.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Minnesota Criminal Justice Data Network Certification and pass the CJIS Competency Exam within 6 months of employment. Annual certifications are required to continue employment.

    • Serving individuals living with a mental health condition, substance use disorder, and/or homelessness and housing instability.
    • Collaborating with first responders to address the safety and needs of individuals.
    • Serving individuals who have contact with criminal justice systems.
    • Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds including efforts towards disparity reduction.
    • Working in a crisis response setting.
  • Knowledge of:
    • County and community resources for mental health, substance use disorder, social services, and basic needs.
    • Harm reduction and trauma-informed care principles.
    • Person-centered thinking.
    • Social determinants of health.
    • Social work best practices, ethics, and knowledge of data privacy.
    • Assessment tools to determine threat to self, threat to others, high-risk behaviors and de-escalation strategies.
  • Ability to:
    • Function well in unpredictable and challenging situations calling for sensitivity, flexibility, resourcefulness, and independent judgment.
    • Work well independently and as a team.
    • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, organizational, and computer skills.
  • Licensure or working towards licensure in any of the following:
    • Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (LAMFT), Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LSGW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC).
Candidates with fluency in another language(s) in addition to English are encouraged to apply. Bilingual candidates who pass a language assessment may qualify for additional bilingual pay and duties.
