REGIONAL SCHOOL UNIT #4 in Maine is seeking a Long Term Sub Social Worker to support students in Litchfield, Sabattus and Wales. Anticipated dates: 9/1/26 – 10/23/26.

The role includes family and individual assessments, counseling services, and classroom observations. You will coordinate with teachers, the Director of Special Education, and the Pupil Evaluation Team to develop plans that remove barriers to learning and promote students’ well‑being and success.

Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Social Work and/or related field.
  • Minimum of an Associate Social Worker (A.S.W.).

Responsibilities

  • Family assessments involve one to three meetings with family members who directly affect the referred student. A family history is taken as well as a profile of the family’s present strengths and limitations. The data is analyzed and recommendations are made to the family and pupil evaluation team.
  • Individual assessments may involve one to three meetings with the student and in some cases, classroom observations are completed. Date regarding the student’s past and present academic performance; social/familial relationships; emotional and physical development; and strengths and limitations is compiled. Recommendations are made to the pupil evaluation team. Individual assessments also include substance abuse evaluations.
  • Classroom/playground observations involve one or more visitations to the classroom and/or playground. Student/teacher and student/peer relationships are observed as well as the student’s ability to adjust to the environmental and academic requirements. Recommendations are made to the pupil evaluation team.

Duties

To help students whose intellectual, emotional, economic, social, cultural, physical and/or family characteristics have interfered with their ability to adapt to the routine of school.

To alleviate stress on individual and/or groups of students and to help them use learning opportunities more effectively by bringing about change in the systems surrounding the students, namely school, community, peers and family.

Responsibilities

Direct Services (offered on a limited basis)
  • Individual counseling is offered. This includes individual sessions with students who have shown an inability to cope with his/her environment.
  • Parent(s) counseling is offered on a limited basis to those parents who are experiencing difficulty with their marital and parent/child relationships as well as those parents whose emotional problems are adversely affecting the children. It is hoped that alleviating parental stress will help alleviate the student’s stress.
  • Family counseling includes parents, children, and all others directly affecting the functioning of the family system. Family issues are discussed and solutions sought through role playing, sculpting, therapy assignments, and other therapy techniques. It is hoped that refocusing the student’s problems as family problems will alleviate the stress on the student who will then perform more effectively in schools.
  • Group counseling involves six to ten students in a small group experience where their social skills are enhanced and solutions to problems sought through sharing of ideas. Students who experience problems with trust, poor social relationships, poor self-concept, poor academic motivation, or various social problems such as separation and loss of a family member, alcoholism within the family, and family violence benefit from the group experience. The group sessions involve various pre-planned activities as well as sharing and discussion time. The groups last for approximately ten weeks.
  • From time to time parent support or educational groups are provided. This is based on interest.
Consulting Services
  • Teacher consult: Meetings with regular and special education teachers, and guidance personnel regarding individual or groups of students are conducted as requested and as needed.
  • Parent consult: Meetings with parents regarding their children are scheduled as needed and as requested.
  • Pupil Evaluation Team consult: Attendance at IEP meetings as needed and requested.
  • Student consult: Meetings with students regarding minor issues are provided as needed and as requested.
  • Agency consult: Liaison between community agencies, needy students and families. This included referrals, advocacy, and follow-up.
Other Responsibilities
  • Develop and provide workshops and training to district staff, parents, students and community as needed and as requested.
  • Complete required paperwork for administration and client reports.
  • Maintain professional growth through workshops, institutes, conferences and graduate course attendance as well as regular clinical supervision.
  • Maintain membership in appropriate professional organizations, teams and groups.
Evaluation
  • Director of Special Education in Regional School Unit #4 will provide verbal and written evaluation social worker’s performance.
  • Regional School Unit #4 staff will evaluate my services on any district-wide special education evaluations conducted.
  • Written and/or verbal reports to the School Board will be made as needed and as requested.
