Job description

Job Opening: Social Worker II - Work First Unit

The Johnston County Department of Social Services is dedicated to serving, aiding, and protecting needy and vulnerable children and adults. Our mission is to strengthen and preserve families through human services programs that promote health, well-being, self-sufficiency, and protection within our community.

We currently have an immediate opening for a Social Worker II in the Work First Unit. The responsibilities include:

  1. Determining and/or re-determining client eligibility for public assistance programs.
  2. Interviewing clients to obtain required information.
  3. Completing ongoing applications, verifying information, and determining eligibility.
  4. Coordinating services through Temporary Assistance for Needy Families to help families improve employability via education, training, and supportive services, aiming for increased self-sufficiency and reduced dependency on public assistance.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

  1. Knowledge of Work First Family Assistance policy.
  2. Knowledge of social work principles, techniques, practices, and their application to complex casework, group work, and community issues.
  3. Knowledge of community resources and organizations, both governmental and private.
  4. Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies governing the program.
  5. Skill in establishing rapport with clients and assessing psychological and behavioral aspects of client problems.
  6. Ability to supervise, train, or instruct lower-level staff, students, or interns.
  7. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with clients, their families, and community organizations.
  8. Excellent communication skills and ability to plan and execute work effectively.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in social work from an accredited institution, or
  • Bachelor's degree in a human services field plus one year of related experience, or
  • Bachelor's degree plus two years of related experience, or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
