Overview

SOCIAL WORKER II (NC Local Government Job Description)

Work involves providing professional social work services to clients in a variety of settings including local human service agencies, correctional facilities, teaching hospitals, medical schools, psychiatric hospitals and mental retardation centers. Responsibilities include evaluating clients, developing a social history, psychosocial assessment, service plan and/or treatment plan, and follow-up. Services may include placement in a residential facility; basic counseling and support in areas such as death and dying, employment, vocational, medical, health, or behavioral issues. Address problems such as adjustment to illness or disability, placement into institutions, rest homes or nursing facilities, financial concerns, socialization issues of the socially handicapped or those debilitated by age or illness. May provide information to and confer with schools, natural parents and foster parents on habilitation plans, behavior management, and other needs.

Responsibilities
  • DIFFICULTY OF WORK: Variety and Scope – Independently perform assessments to identify needs and establish an appropriate service/treatment plan; may provide supportive or directive counseling to clients and families. May participate as an inter/multi-disciplinary team member. Refer clients and families to services to meet financial, psychological, emergency care, emotional, or other needs. May assume a case manager role to coordinate through agency and external services.
  • Intricacy – Manage a broad range of service needs; make accurate assessments/evaluations and develop service/treatment plans using knowledge of various services and counseling techniques.
  • Subject Matter Complexity – Understand social work practices and theories; knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes and developmental/behavior management concepts as required by setting.
  • Guidelines – Apply agency guidelines, federal/state standards, and counseling principles in client services.
  • RESPONSIBILITY: Nature of Instructions – Work toward program aims and objectives, often with new requirements/training from supervisors.
  • Nature of Review – Document direct client interactions, service development, and referrals per agency requirements; work reviewed by supervisor or regulatory body.
  • Scope of Decisions – Decisions impact clients and families; may direct lower-level staff, volunteers, or care providers.
  • Consequence of Decisions – Service/treatment decisions affect client well-being and facility operations.
  • INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS: Scope of Contacts – Varies by agency; includes clients, service providers, community agencies, volunteers, foster/natural parents, court officials, schools, nursing homes, interns, and residents.
  • Nature and Purpose – Develop and implement treatment plans with clients and families; coordinate services with other professionals and community organizations.
  • OTHER WORK DEMANDS: Work Conditions – Settings range from modern public service buildings to correctional facilities, residential facilities, home environments, or institutions with odors/noise;
  • Hazards – Potential emotional stress and risk of injury due to client behaviors in some settings.
  • RECRUITMENT STANDARDS: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – Substantial knowledge of social work principles, theories, and applications to individual, group, and community problems; psychosocial, socioeconomic and behavioral problem knowledge; familiarity with community resources and laws/regulations; medical terminology knowledge in some settings. Skills include rapport-building and assessment of psychosocial and behavioral issues; ability to work with diverse stakeholders; ability to train lower-level staff, students, or interns; ability to communicate ideas clearly and plan/explore work.
  • Minimum Training and Experience – Bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field with specified experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
