Department Summary
The Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center benefits from a large, expert faculty covering areas from psychoanalysis to neurobiology to psychiatric epidemiology, including unique fields such as medical ethics, health economics, family systems, psychotherapy research, neurogenesis, and psychoneuroendocrinology. Our goals are to provide excellent clinical care, conduct groundbreaking research, and train future psychiatry practitioners. Our patient care spans UT Southwestern University Hospitals, Parkland, Dallas Veterans Affairs, Children’s Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, and Terrell State Hospital, with outpatient and community services collaborating with local agencies.

Provides professional, medical, and psychiatric social casework services under close supervision for hospital or clinic patients.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in medical and/or psychiatric social work, including 1 year as a Social Work Assistant or equivalent (education may substitute experience)
  • Licenses: LBSW (Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker) upon hire; open to LMSW candidates

Job Duties

  • Interview patients and families to gather information about home environment, relationships, health history, and other personal factors.
  • Counsel patients regarding medical, surgical, and other treatment options.
  • Evaluate information and collaborate with medical staff to develop patient-specific programs.
  • Follow up through home visits or calls, coordinate appointments and transportation, and adjust care plans as needed.
  • Assist patients and families in understanding and following medical and psychiatric recommendations.
  • Refer patients to community resources for financial, legal, employment, or personal assistance.
  • Maintain detailed case notes and histories.
  • Interpret social, emotional, and economic factors to medical teams and social service agencies.
  • Conduct community meetings and supervise students or junior staff if applicable.
  • Participate in clinical or laboratory research as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
