Job summary

South Peninsula Hospital in Alaska seeks a licensed clinical social worker to provide advanced psychosocial services across acute care and Psychiatric Emergency Services, combining crisis assessment with ongoing care coordination. Base pay is $43.17/hour, with a union, dayshift schedule, generous benefits, and opportunities for loan

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program or equivalent recognized accrediting body.
  • Current, unrestricted license authorizing independent clinical social work practice in the state or jurisdiction of employment (LCSW or equivalent).
  • Clinical experience in an acute care hospital, emergency department, crisis service, inpatient behavioral health setting, or comparable high-acuity environment; two or more years of post-licensure experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive psychosocial assessments, care coordination, discharge planning, clinical consultation, and patient and family support, with acute care serving as the primary assignment.
  • Provide scheduled Psychiatric Emergency Services coverage, including behavioral health evaluations, suicide and violence risk assessment, crisis intervention, stabilization, de-escalation, and safety planning.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, interdisciplinary care teams, behavioral health providers, community agencies, and other partners to develop safe and appropriate plans of care and transitions.
  • Assess and respond to complex behavioral health and psychosocial concerns, including substance use, abuse or neglect, housing and resource needs, guardianship, safety concerns, and barriers to treatment or discharge.
  • Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation, facilitate referrals and handoffs, and practice in accordance with professional ethics, licensure requirements, organizational policy, and applicable law.

Knowledge and Experience
  • Master’s degree in Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program or equivalent recognized accrediting body.
  • Current, unrestricted license authorizing independent clinical social work practice in the state or jurisdiction of employment (LCSW or equivalent).
  • Clinical experience in an acute care hospital, emergency department, crisis service, inpatient behavioral health setting, or comparable high-acuity environment; two or more years of post-licensure experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated skill in psychosocial assessment, crisis intervention, suicide and violence risk assessment, care coordination, discharge planning, de-escalation, and clinical documentation.
  • Knowledge of mental health and substance-use disorders, trauma-informed care, social drivers of health, mandated reporting, confidentiality, community resources, and applicable emergency behavioral health requirements.
  • Ability to exercise sound clinical judgment, establish rapport, communicate effectively during emotionally charged situations, and independently prioritize competing needs while recognizing when consultation or escalation is necessary.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records, secure communication systems, and standard office technology.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to move throughout clinical areas, remain at a workstation for portions of the shift, communicate effectively in person and electronically, and respond promptly to urgent clinical situations, with reasonable accommodations as applicable.

South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22-bed Acute Care Critical Access Hospital and 28-bed Long Term Care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska . This position works primarily in acute inpatient care with scheduled coverage in Psychiatric Emergency Services, offering the opportunity to work closely with interdisciplinary teams and community partners in a small, community-focused healthcare environment. The work is fast-paced and may involve frequent interruptions, changing priorities, and emotionally complex situations.

Job Hazards:

This role may involve exposure to infectious illness, bodily fluids, emotionally distressed individuals, and potentially unsafe or unpredictable patient behavior.
