Scope and Employment

This is a statewide recruitment. The posting is open and continuous; we accept applications for this classification year round. Eligible lists will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this classification within DHS and its offices, located in each of Maryland's counties and Baltimore City. Applicants should indicate on their applications all counties (or Baltimore City) where they are willing to work.

GRADE 18

Current vacancies include the Baltimore City Department of Social Services Extended Hours program, which involves non‑traditional 10‑hour shifts on weekdays and weekends, four days in, three days out, with additional salary for the schedule.

Main Purpose of Job

This supervisory position of professional social work provides preventive or protective services to vulnerable adults, children, or families. Cases involve suspected abuse or neglect, out‑of‑home placement, guardianship or emergency protective orders, adoption, or adult case management. Employees supervise lower‑level social workers.

Minimum Education or General Requirements
  • Education: A Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited college or university. A Master’s with the major title “Social Work” is mandatory; no substitutions.
  • Experience: Three years of experience providing child welfare or adult services to vulnerable children, individuals, or families.
Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications
  • Licensed as a Master Social Worker (approved for independent practice), Certified Social Worker, or Certified Social Worker‑Clinical issued by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners. Include your licensure number.
  • May be required to possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license if duties involve vehicle operation.
Special Requirements
  • Complete an approved training program and pass a competency test before permanent employment.
  • Meet mandatory continuing education standards; failure may result in disciplinary action.
  • Provide a reachable telephone number if required.
Selection Process
