We blend the proven strengths of Finnish educational practices with core American values, creating a dynamic environment that fosters lifelong learning and personal growth.

Position Overview

We are searching for a passionate and creative Secondary Social Studies and English Language Arts Teacher to become a vital part of our team. The ideal candidate will inspire students through hands-on, community-connected learning experiences, promote critical thinking and independence, and integrate real-world connections to enhance learning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Studies, English, or a related field.
  • Valid teaching certification for Middle and High School with endorsements in Social Studies and/or English Language Arts.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching Social Studies and ELA at the Middle and High School levels.
  • Familiarity with Finnish education practices and enthusiasm for weaving them into classroom instruction.
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • A deep commitment to creating an engaging, joy-filled, and inclusive learning environment.

Duties

Social Studies and ELA Instruction:

  • Design and deliver interactive, differentiated lessons in Social Studies and English Language Arts that align with curriculum standards and Finnish educational principles.
  • Cultivate curiosity and analytical thinking by exploring historical events, cultural narratives, and literary works through discussion, debate, and creative expression.

Promoting Student Independence:

  • Employ teaching strategies that encourage students to take initiative in their learning, such as research projects, Socratic seminars, and reflective writing.
  • Foster critical thinking and communication skills through inquiry-based activities and student-led discussions.

Hands-On Learning:

  • Incorporate experiential, hands-on activities—such as historical simulations, mock trials, community mapping, or creative writing workshops—to deepen understanding and make learning meaningful.
  • Facilitate collaborative projects that connect students with local history, current events, or literary traditions, enhancing teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Community Engagement and Real-World Connections:

  • Build bridges between the classroom and the local community by inviting local historians, authors, or civic leaders as guest speakers, or organizing field trips to historical sites and cultural landmarks.
  • Involve the broader community in hands-on learning experiences, such as service projects, oral history initiatives, or literary readings, to enrich student learning and strengthen community ties.

Assessment and Feedback:

  • Use a variety of assessments (e.g., essays, presentations, portfolios) to track student growth and adapt instruction to meet diverse needs.
  • Provide constructive, timely feedback that empowers students to refine their skills and pursue continuous improvement.

Collaboration and Professional Development:

  • Work closely with colleagues to create interdisciplinary learning opportunities and maintain a supportive school culture.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay informed about effective teaching practices.

If you are eager to ignite a passion for Social Studies and English Language Arts, empower independent thinkers, and connect students with their community and the wider world, we invite you to apply for this rewarding role at Copper Island Academy.
