Social Media Manager

Regular Full-Time Professional New York, NY, US

Salary Range: $140,000.00 To $150,000.00 Annually

Mellon Foundation ("Foundation") believes that the arts and humanities are where we express our complex humanity, and we believe that everyone deserves the beauty, transcendence, and freedom to be found there. Through our grants, we seek to build just communities enriched by meaning and empowered by critical thinking, where ideas and imagination can thrive. The Foundation makes grants in four core program areas - Higher Learning, Arts and Culture, Public Knowledge, and Humanities in Place - and through its signature Presidential Initiatives. The Foundation seeks a Social Media Manager in the Communications department.

About the department:

The Mellon Foundation's team of communications professionals are responsible for building and stewarding the Foundation brand, telling its story, and driving outreach and engagement efforts both internally and externally. Our work strives to:

  • Build broad brand affinity and connection with the Mellon Foundation's work
  • Encourage appreciation, understanding of, and engagement with the work of our grantees
  • Broadly advocate for the centrality of the arts and humanities in culture
Position Summary:

Reporting to the Integrated Content Director, the Social Media Manager will be part of a growing team of communications professionals interested in producing and communicating meaningful, relevant, and impactful work at the Mellon Foundation. The successful candidate will be a very hands‑on communications strategist, motivated by the opportunity to activate and care for online communities that are informed, engaged, and empowered by Mellon and the work we support.

We use digital tools and social media as primary channels for bringing our mission and message to broader audiences. As the operator of Mellon’s owned channels, the Manager is a social media champion, demonstrates an expert understanding of digital media, and is motivated to use social media in new and innovative ways for driving engagement with storytelling, announcements, and events from Mellon. They are culturally curious about the topics and projects supported by Mellon and have a track record of entrepreneurial approaches to modes of storytelling. The Manager is also involved with editorial planning, content development, and creative asset iteration. To stay up to date on the performance and features of current and emergent platforms, the Manager maintains relationships with partnership reps from major technology companies, including Meta, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google, and others, as well as understanding current trends, platform changes, and contemporary best practices.

The Manager helps keep a pulse on Mellon’s grantees and their overall sectors, maximizing value from grantees’ earned and social media stories for Mellon’s own channels. The Manager should also maximize opportunities to leverage and repurpose Mellon’s small but growing body of evergreen content.

Position Description:

Responsibilities may include, but will not be limited to the following:

60% Content Development and Publishing. Conceive, organize, develop, and publish compelling copy, photos, and other creative content, working when needed with Mellon’s Creative team, colleagues in content creation, freelance contributors, and other staff. Ensure all published content is factual and error‑free, aligned with an editorial plan, and that the tone and voice follow messaging platform. Maintain awareness of best practices for digital accessibility and update accordingly.

30% Growth and Engagement. Identify and drive new strategies that build Mellon’s profile. Create meaningful exchanges with online audiences to ensure that anyone who interacts with Mellon has an experience that is consistent with our brand values. Identify and cultivate influencer partners to drive the reach of Mellon’s content and discover new areas of growth. Recommend new handles to follow and engagement opportunities. Collaborate with digital agencies on cross‑platform paid campaigns.

10% Measurement and Reporting. Create and maintain instruments for tracking metrics across digital platforms, including social media channels, paid digital advertising campaigns, and the website. This critical information will be utilized to inform media planning and resource allocation and other creative improvements. Monitor sentiment and social listening tools to report on topics and trends of importance to Mellon.

  • Demonstrated understanding of graphics and design on the web
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and maintain nuanced reporting and analysis of digital properties
