Position Information

















The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics. In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a SNAP-Ed. Program Associate II, Community Nutrition Outreach - Burlington County for the Family and Community Health Sciences within the Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.


Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Provides a diverse range of research, extension, and education programs that serve the people of New Jersey and the urban, suburban, and rural communities in which they live. Through its Cooperative Extension offices in all 21 New Jersey counties, dedicated 4-H agents, Extension specialists, Family & Community Health Sciences educators, and Agriculture and Natural Resources agents work to serve New Jersey residents in every area of the state.

  • Provides nutrition education to SNAP-eligible residents located in Burlington County and all of SNAP-Ed Region 2.

  • Promotes healthy lifestyles and environments for NJ residents and communities with outreach in food, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles. Recognized nationally for its work, FCHS connects Rutgers University and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station to communities beyond the campus to build healthy families, schools, and communities. Based locally, in each county, FCHS supports efforts to meet the health and wellness challenges facing communities throughout the state through engaged civic learning, volunteerism, service, community-based research, education, and integrated efforts and partnerships.

  • Provides nutrition education for the SNAP-Ed program in Burlington County, with occasional coverage in Camden, Gloucester, and Mercer Counties based on need.

  • Supports evidence-based nutrition education and obesity prevention interventions and projects for persons eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) through complementary direct education, multi-level interventions, and community and public health approaches to improve nutrition.

  • Provides help program participants improve their food security; dietary quality; physical activity; and food safety behaviors.

  • Recruits and works with agencies willing to host SNAP-Ed program(s).

  • Ensures compliance with all federal outreach and budget guidelines regarding all activities that occur within the project.

  • Reports designed to document the project's success.

  • Serves on appropriate boards and councils in the community to maintain a strong presence for the program.

  • Serves as a role model for his/her volunteers and always maintains a professional demeanor and confidentiality.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • A bachelor's degree in nutrition, health education, public health, nursing, allied health, health sciences, biology or biological sciences, social work, urban studies/community development or related discipline; and/or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • A valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications

  • Nutrition degree preferred.


  • RDN or CHES preferred.

  • Experience implementing community health promotion and behavior change programs.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, and have experience working with diverse groups/clientele.

  • Experience working with limited resource, urban populations.

Equipment Utilized

  • Highly proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher).

  • Comfortable utilizing appliances and kitchen supplies for cooking and food preparation with hands on nutrition education lessons.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • This position must have the ability to carry program materials and supplies, including audio-visual equipment.

  • Ability to arrange set-up of class space (move tables and chairs).

  • The individual must successfully complete Rutgers Youth Protection and Serv Safe Food Handler Training.

Special Conditions

  • Clean Driving Record.

  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends; able to travel statewide.

  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands.
